From the author of The Soviet Union and the Middle East comes an examination of glasnost, or liberalization, in Russia through discussion of its impact on the Soviet economy, culture, and politics. In an effort to examine Mikhail Gorbachev and the political style that emerged in the Soviet Union after he became the secretary general of the Communist Party, American historian Walter Laqueur analyzes how Gorbachev’s rule has impacted Soviet society and culture, both through how the government is now run and how citizens are reacting. Laqueur discusses how glasnost has led to many revelations about the Soviet Union that were since unheard of, as well as how long this era of insight could last when considering the country’s position as a state in ferment. Beginning in the nineteenth century and progressing to present day, The Long Road to Freedom examines the political and economic changes that have come with glasnost in Russia, including speculations on the developments that are likely to come if it continues in this state of liberalization.

Although there is an abundance of scholarly inquiry into the effects on the Soviet socialist system of the historic reforms under Gorbachev's administration, relatively little attention has been paid to the impact these reforms might have on socialism outside the Soviet Union. This book makes a preliminary assessment of the impact of glasnost, perestroika, and related Soviet reforms on selected socialist countries. The sampling of socialist countries studied are roughly representative of the types of socialist states in existence today. The countries studied include Poland, Czechoslovakia, China, Cuba, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and North Korea. The contributors to this volume approach their topics from varying perspectives, each singling out and examining different areas in the individual governments where the impact of Soviet reforms is likely to be strongest. The result is a number of varying conclusions regarding the effects of glasnost and perestroika on the socialist community. In some cases, the impact might be intentional and direct, part of a conscious policy adopted by the Soviet Union. In other cases, the impact may be indirect and even unintentional, given the complex and interdependent nature of world politics and economics. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in comparative politics, international relations, and communist studies will find this book a source of stimulating ideas about the rapidly changing face of socialism.

This Note examines the beginnings of Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost (openness) policy and its impact on Soviet foreign policy. It traces the gradual widening of Soviet public discussion of foreign and security policy issues and identifies the external and domestic factors driving this development. It covers the period from 1985 through October 1988, but it also makes reference to more recent events. Starting as exposure of corrupt officials, glasnost soon was expanded and used to undermine the conservative opposition to perestroika (restructuring) and the new political thinking. Positive Western reaction to glasnost, welcoming it as proof of Gorbachev's peaceful intentions, stimulated its further expansion. Glasnost undid the Soviet "enemy image" and thus cleared the way for cooperation with the West while the regime sought a way out of the crisis facing the country. Because of the internal power struggle, glasnost has survived attempts to reverse it. As contending elements state their differing views, information regarding Soviet foreign policy and its formulation increases.
