The content of the book reconsiders the relation between visibility and transcendence. The focus is especially on the contribution to this issue from the theological tradition in protestant Europe between the 16th and the 21st Centuries. In the book a thematically broad field is covered embracing more than five centuries and a plurality of methods drawn from theology, philosophy, and the history and theory of art.The book is divided into five sub-themes: In the first and more fundamental part, 'The phenomenology of in-visibility', questions underlying the other four themes are sought defined or narrowed down. Here the modes of appearing/revealing or hiding of phenomena are reflected. In the second section of the book dealing with 'Language as a mode of revealing and hiding' the specific role of verbal expressions understood in a very broad sense is at the core: What is the fundamental understanding and use of language, when speaking of the ineffable? The third section about 'Human existence between visibility and invisibility' focuses on theological anthropology: its features and norms. The ambiguity of anthropological categories such as faith, rationality, imagination, memory and emotion play a prominent role in this context.Thefourth section concerning 'The manifestation of a 'beyond' in the arts' investigates transcendence in the arts. What are the theological discourses behind the religious uses of the different artistic media (i.e. images, music, liturgical inventory, architecture)? Finally in the fifth section concerning 'Visible community and invisible transcendence' one finds contributions working with the idea of 'vicarious representation'.

English summary: The Pastoral Epistles speak more than other early Christian scriptures about faith ( pistis ), and they do it differently than Paul does. An interpretation of all the records of faith (pistis word family) shows that the scope of pistis in the Corpus Pastorale is huge. On the one hand, it is a primary word, framing all references of Christian life, and on the other hand it is completely determined by the relation to Christ and/or God. Thus faith has an integrating character, and at the same time it indicates the center of Christian existence. At the beginning of this first monograph about faith in the Pastoral Epistles, the author examines some fundamental terms, such as faith, pistis, fides/credere as well as the Corpus Pastorale, the Pastoral Epistles or the TritoPaulines. German description: Vom Glauben (Pistis) ist in den Pastoralbriefen in vielfachen Kontexten und mehr als in anderen fruhchristlichen Schriften die Rede. Trotz des sehr engen Anschlusses an Paulus sind aber z.B. nicht die Werke des Gesetzes als Gegensatz im Blick. Eine Auslegung samtlicher Belege zeigt, dass Pistis im Corpus Pastorale eine grosse Breite aufweist: Glaube bildet einerseits eine Art Rahmenbegriff und Grundwort fur das Christliche uberhaupt und bleibt andererseits christologisch bestimmt; er bildet die Grundrelation zwischen Gott und Mensch und stellt eine belastbare Basis der Gemeinschaft dar. Pistis hat integrierenden Charakter und bezeichnet die Mitte christlicher Existenz . Diese Manuskripte werfen viele Fragen auf und haben zu hitzigen Debatten unter Wissenschaftlern geführt. Um die Entstehungsgeschichte des Korans besser zu verstehen, müssen wir uns auch mit der Kultur und der Gesellschaft des 7. Jahrhunderts auseinandersetzen. Die Arabische Halbinsel war zu dieser Zeit von vielen verschiedenen Stämmen und Religionen geprägt. Mohammeds Botschaft des Monotheismus und der Einheit Gottes traf auf Widerstand, aber gewann auch viele Anhänger. Die politische und kulturelle Landschaft des 7. Jahrhunderts hatte einen großen Einfluss auf die Entstehung und Verbreitung des Korans. Insgesamt ist die Entstehungsgeschichte des Korans ein faszinierendes und komplexes Thema, das viele Fragen aufwirft. Es gibt immer noch viel, was wir nicht wissen und es bleibt ein aktives Forschungsgebiet für Wissenschaftler auf der ganzen Welt. The art historian Aby M. Warburg and the philosopher Walter Benjamin are widely respected as two of the most significant cultural theorists of the twentieth century.
