Kann man den "Glauben lehren"? Wohl kaum, denn der Glaube ist ein Ereignis der kreativen Gegenwart Gottes. Viel eher gibt es im Glauben und für ihn etwas zu lehren und zu lernen. Dies zu tun, ist die vornehmste Aufgabe der Dogmatik. In diesem Sinne mag sie dann "Glaubenslehre" oder – als Vorgang – eben "Glauben lehren" heißen. Eine solche Glaubenslehre ist kein fertiges und zu memorierendes Produkt, sondern das je neue verstehende Herangehen an Einzelthemen des Glaubens. Deshalb legt dieser Band Studien zu großen Themen der Dogmatik vor und ordnet sie dem klassischen Loci-Schema entsprechend an, dies aber bewusst von unterschiedlichen Autorinnen und Autoren aus mehreren theologischen Disziplinen. Das kreative Spiel der Begriffe, aus dem der Vorgang "Glauben lehren" besteht, soll auf diese Weise vorangebracht werden. Mit Beiträgen von Peter Dabrock, Alexander Deeg, Reinhard Feldmeier, Martin Hailer, Nadine Hamilton, Stephen Hamilton, Marco Hofheinz, Simon Layer, Ernstpeter Maurer, Stephan Mikusch, Andreas Nehring, Ingrid Schoberth, Walter Sparn und Hans Ulrich. [Teaching Faith] Is it possible to "teach faith"? Hardly: for faith is an event of God's creative presence. Rather, there is something to teach and to learn in faith, as well for the sake of it. This is the noblest task of dogmatics, which can be called "the teachings of the faith" - but also simply "teaching faith". Rightly understood, such teachings of the faith are not a finished product to be memorized, but instead present a hermeneutical approach to the various subjects and questions involved in faith. In this spirit, the present volume presents studies on major topics in dogmatics and arranges them according to the classical loci scheme. Here, however, this task is not undertaken only by one systematic theologian, or even a group of systematic theologians, but instead by different authors from various theological disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach produces a conceptual creativity which characterises this book and is crucial for the process of "teaching faith" in general.

A new 2022 translation into American English of Philipp Melanchthon's 1530 Augsburg Confession (Confessio Augustana) and his expansive defense of this important Protestant Confession, his "Apologia der Konfession" published soon after. These translations are followed by the original German manuscripts. This is volume IV in The Complete Works of Philipp Melanchthon The Augsburg Confession is one of the founding documents of Protestantism, directly leading to the Edict of Worms and the formal excommunication of Luther and his compatriots. The Confessio Augustana, written by Melanchthon in New Latin and in Early New High German, was composed by Melanchthon on behalf of the entire Wittenberg Reformation as a polemic against not only Emperor Charles V’s Catholicism, but also other Protestant movements, particularly the Anabaptists and the “enemy of the sacraments” (the Zwinglians). Later editions attempted to include the Zwinglian version of Reformed teachings. Zwingli penned his own version at the exact same time, called the Confessio Tetrapolitana. This confession was refuted by the emperor in June of 1530 in the Confutio Augustana, the Augsburg Refutation. Melanchthons’ Apologia Confessionis Augustanae was in answer to this document, which Melanchthon completed in 1531. The Roman church agreed with the bulk of the articles (Articles 1-3, 5, 8-14, 16-18 and 20), pointing out that the Wittenberg Reformation was deliberately misrepresenting Catholic teachings. Still, the Confutatio condemned the simplistic dichotomy of Faith and Works, and argued that is was based on an over-emphasis on Paul's letters excluding books such as the Book of James, which Martin Luther believed was "inspired by the Devil". This confession was critical for the Religious Wars of the 16th and 17th centuries. The military alliance of the Protestants, the Schmalkaldic League, made the Confessio Augustana the basis of its confederation.
