In der umfangreichen Forschungsdiskussion wurden sie jedoch häufig losgelöst von ihrem literarischen Kontext betrachtet. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt das Thomasevangelium als eigenständige Form der Jesusrezeption wahr und geht der Frage nach, welche Bedeutung die Gleichnisse und Parabeln im Kontext dieser Schrift gewinnen. Nach einer grundlegenden Reflexion darüber, wie sich die spezifische Hermeneutik des Thomasevangeliums auf die Wahrnehmung parabolischer Gattungen auswirkt, folgen sorgfältige Einzeltextanalysen. Darauf aufbauend wird dargestellt, dass die Gleichnisse und Parabeln einen bedeutenden inhaltlichen Beitrag zur Theologie dieser Schrift leisten, indem sie etwa mehrfach das exemplarische Handeln einzelner Figuren darstellen. Zugleich regt die besondere Deutungsoffenheit der Gleichnisse und Parabeln des Thomasevangeliums dazu an, dass die Rezipientinnen und Rezipienten selbst nach der Deutung der Worte Jesu suchen.
