When writing his memoirs after World War II, German Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring stated, “Italy’s missing her chance to occupy the island [of Malta] at the start of hostilities will go down in history as a fundamental blunder.” It’s easy to see why this tiny 95 square mile island held such a prominent place in the war’s Mediterranean Theater. Located almost halfway between the British bases of Gibraltar and Alexandria, Egypt, and just 60 miles south of Sicily, her airfields and naval base stood directly in the path of Italy’s (and her German partner’s) line of communication from Europe to North Africa. Operation C3 is a detailed study of the Axis 1942 plan to invade and take the island of Malta. The book examines the future combatants up to the Axis capture of Tobruk, in June 1942. The book then provides a realistic assessment of what would have had to happen if the Axis had decided to launch the invasion. Operation C3 then provides a day-by-day battle narrative of the invasion as if it had occurred on Saturday, August 15, 1942. The battle narrative is based on the combatant’s actual plans from the Italian and Maltese archives. and the realistic appraisal of what could have happened when those plans collide. A Reality & Analysis section is added after the battle narrative to discuss what really happened after Tobruk fell and why Operation C3 was never attempted.

Questo libro di Storia è stato realizzato in occasione dell’80° anniversario della partecipazione dell’Italia al secondo conflitto mondiale, avvenuta in data 10 giugno 1940. Pur nella scarsa preparazione del Regio Esercito e nell’impiego di materiali in parte obsoleti o di tecnologia carente, sia da parte dell’Esercito, sia in parte della Regia Aeronautica, la scelta politica del momento di intervento e la sostanziale impreparazione e povertà di risorse messe in campo contro di noi dall’unico avversario che in quel momento doveva confrontarsi con noi e con la nostra alleata Germania, permette di dire che noi POTEVAMO VINCERE, se la guerra dichiarata a giugno fosse stata effettivamente combattuta per mare, per terra e per cielo, con le risorse (che non erano affatto poche) che complessivamente avevamo, ma che non utilizzammo negli unici due fronti di scontro con l’unico nemico che fronteggiavamo: la Gran Bretagna, con il suo impero coloniale. Questo confronto, oltre che nel mare Mediterraneo, poteva avvenire solo alla frontiera libico-egiziana e nell’Impero dell’Africa Orientale Italiana, che era accerchiato da possedimenti britannici. Una serie di errori “strategici” (oltre a quelli tattici avvenuti poi sul campo di battaglia) hanno da subito condizionato negativamente la nostra guerra. Per colpa o voluti? La nostra guerra è stata sicuramente boicottata da elementi dei vertici militari; ma il boicottaggio in guerra corrisponde al TRADIMENTO. Questo infame aggettivo è stato codificato dagli Alleati con la stesura dell’articolo 16 del Trattato di Pace che il Governo della Repubblica Italiana ha dovuto sottoscrivere nel febbraio 1947 a Parigi, quale Nazione sconfitta, poiché a poco è valso il voltafaccia dell’8 settembre 1943, col passaggio nelle file degli Alleati in qualità di “cobelligeranti”. Con questo libro si cerca di dimostrare, attraverso l’analisi di una serie di episodi o delle modalità d’impiego delle modeste risorse militari, o di comportamenti di singoli vertici militari, che se la guerra fosse stata effettivamente preparata (il Patto d’Acciaio fu firmato nel maggio 1939) e portata avanti in maniera corretta e temporalmente sviluppata nei primi 4/6 mesi dall’intervento, non solo l’Italia l’avrebbe vinta da sola (come nel 1918), ma l’avrebbe fatta vincere di conseguenza anche alla Germania, che in quel periodo era impegnata solo sul fronte continentale. Forse questa è la vera motivazione per cui la nostra guerra fu boicottata: perché non si voleva la vittoria della Germania in Europa, pur essendo politicamente nostra alleata, cogliendo così l’occasione di liberarsi del regime fascista attraverso una sconfitta militare della Nazione, come aveva auspicato il fuoriuscito antifascista Rosselli nel 1933
