Excerpt from The Inside Story of the Peace Conference IT is almost superfluous to say that this book does not claim to be a history, however summary, of the Peace Conference, seeing that such a work was made sheer impossible by the chief Delegates themselves when they decided to dispense with records of their conversations and debates. It is only a sketch a sketch of the problems which the war created or rendered more acute; of the conditions under which they cropped up of the simplicist ways in which they were conceived by the distinguished politicians who volunteered to solve them of the Delegates' natural limitations and electioneering commit ments and of the secret influences by which they were swayed of the peoples' needs and expectations; of the unwonted procedure adopted by the Conference and of the fateful consequences to the world of its decisions. In dealing with all those matters I aimed at impartiality, which is an unattainable ideal, but I trust that sincerity and detachment have brought me reasonably close to it. Having no pet theories of my own to champion, my principal standard of judgment is derived from the law of causality. Excerpt from A History of the Peace Conference of Paris, Vol. 1 The object of this history is neither to criticize nor to defend the German or any other Treaty, still less to defend or to criticize the policy of any government or nation taking part in the Conference. The aim is to produce a history at once independent and objective, to detail the facts and to sketch the opinions that prevailed at the Conference. Ultimate history cannot be obtained in this generation on this or any other subject, but the purpose of this history will be attained if it preserves or records some of the materials for ultimate history, which might otherwise have been lost or forgotten. Excerpt from A History of the Peace Conference of Paris, Vol. 6 Endeavours have been made, so far as possible, to make use of the work of American as well as of British participants in the Peace Conference, and, whenever possible, use has also been made of the works of writers of other nationalities such as Nitti and Tardieu. It is probable however, and indeed inevitable, that the work displays a certain bias in favour of British and, to'a less extent, of American policies. But the reader, being warned of the tendencies of the compass, should be able to steer his course aright. In the documents given and in the quotations made from the German and other enemy documents there should be enough material wherewith to check and to criticize any tendencies of this kind. What Really Happened At Paris written by Edward Mandell House and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-13 with History categories.

Excerpt from What Really Happened at Paris: The Story of the Peace Conference, 1918-1919 When the Academy of Music in Philadelphia was taken under lease, in the autumn of 1920, for a term of years by a group of public-spirited citizens, it was for the purpose of acquiring the building so as to dedicate it to the public good. Its sixty-three years of service had given the Academy a wonderful history in which every President of the United States since Franklin Pierce had figured: practically every great orator, artist, and distinguished publicist in the United States and every illustrious visitor from foreign lands had appeared on its stage. It was determined to recreate the Foyer in the building into a beautiful auditorium of intimate size which would serve as a Public Forum. In discussing this project with Colonel Edward M. House, he expressed his conviction that the time had come to tell the American public, for the first time, the inside story of the Peace Conference at Paris. It was decided that instead of following the customary method of publishing the material, it should be first spoken in a series of talks to be given in the Academy Foyer and thus the idea of dedicating the room as a public forum would be launched. Fifteen of the most salient subjects of the Conference were selected, and fifteen of the most authoritative speakers chosen, and a series of fifteen weekly talks explaining "What Really Happened at Paris" was announced. Tickets were sold only for the entire series, and when the first talk was delivered every seat in the auditorium was sold to the most intellectually distinguished audience ever brought together in Philadelphia. Excerpt from Some Problems of the Peace Conference The purpose of the lectures here published is to give a rapid survey of the principal elements in that territorial settlement of Europe which has been pronounced the most reasonable part of the work of the Conference1 of Paris. Each problem is placed in its historical setting, while at the same time the effort is made to view it as some thing demanding practical solution in the treaties of peace. The perspective of proceedings as seen at Paris has been kept in mind throughout, although the authors have not felt at liberty to enter into the details of negotiations which may have become known to them in their official capac ity. Limits of time and space restrict the treat ment to Europe, and to those parts of Europe which came before the Conference for settlement. Hence Russia is necessarily omitted. The lectures are printed substantially as dcliv ered at the Lowell Institute last January, with only incidental revision. In the spelling of place names the official local usage has been followed except where there is a well established English form. The first four chapters were prepared by Mr. Haskins, the last four by Mr. Lord. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Big Four: And Others of the Peace Conference IT is by no means an easy task to analyze and compare the characteristics of the four statesmen who were the leading figures in the Peace Con ference at Paris, or to state without reservation the part which each played in the negotiations, the motives which inspired his actions, and the success or failure of his efforts. It is therefore with a measure of hesitation that I attempt to judge the personalities of the Big Four and to give to each his proper place of prominence in the proceedings of that great assembly of the masters of political thought.
