In the past, attempts at introducing any hypotheses of Earth expansion have always been fraught with a lack of a simple quantitative "motor and mechanism" for expansion. This has been particularly frustrated by the conclusions of palaeomagneticians that the palaeoradius of the Earth has remained essentially static with time. With the completion of oceanic magnetic isochron coverage during the mid 1980s to the present, a method of quantification of past continental configuration is now available to be utilized independently of palaeomagnetics, enabling both palaeoradius and lithospheric plate reconstructions to be accurately constrained with time.
