Focus is on the world-wide phenomenon of linguistic migration to North America. Most treatments of linguistic transfer of European languages to the North American Continent have so far been written within a narrow national-philological framework for each language emigrated, although there are great similarities in the overall history of the migrating languages, both from a micro-linguistic and macro-linguistic point of view. Formal-linguistic phenomena such as for instance borrowing, mixing and code switching occur everywhere in a similar typology of interference and transference which is exemplified in every article of this book. Also the socioethnic development of most north-western European languages in North America demonstrate the same pattern: cultural convergence and loss of distinct ethnic markers in the course of time and change of generations under concomitant loss of the Old World languages. This lack of globality in dealing with the languages emigrated to North America is due to one-sided training in linguistics and is to be seen as an outcome of national upbringing not only in the national philologies but also the nationally-centred type of structural and generative linguistics.

This is the fifth Eurolinguistics volume, which contains the papers given at the 5th International Symposium at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, 2004. It is a continuation of a series on Eurolinguistic publications initiated by the Logos Verlag in 2003. The main aim of the symposium was to explore the effects of language contact and multilingualism in different maritime areas of western and northern Europe: Scandinavia, the Baltic States, the British Isles, The Low Countries, France, Italy, and the Pyrenean Peninsula. The contributions are centered on a wide-range of geohistorical maritime contacts with different spectra of multilingual and minority situations along the coasts and rivers of Maritime Europe. For an adequate and non-traditional subdivision of Europe which is neither national nor political, the articles published here deal with contacts under broader geographical terms such as Eurolinguistics West, Eurolinguistics South and Eurolinguistics North. It contains major water-bound regions belonging to the water-drainage areas of seas, lakes and rivers in the sense of Maritime Eurolinguistics.

The 21 articles in this book were presented in workshops by ELA in Lisbon (Sept. 2009), Moscow (June 2010) and Rome (May 2011). The five chapters are divided into various aspects of general and Europewide Eurolinguistics: Chapter I contains articles written by Schmitt, Broderick, Krasukhin, Kremer, Fu 3 and Socanac. Then, in Chapter II, a completely new view of TRANS- EURASIAN languages is presented by Robbeets. She compares typologically, structurally and historically TRANS-EURASIAN languages (Japanic, Koreanic, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic) in the past and the present, claiming linguistic similarities between them: TRANS-EURASIAN LANGUAGES. Also Broderick summaries in his contribution the EURAFRICAN contacts since the 1890s up to our own millennium and reaches also a scope beyond the European horizon in the south as Robbeets does in the east. In Chapters III and IV following the major European outline, Piirainen and Kiso deal with the surprisingly similar parallels of phraseological figurative units within Europe and beyond which are seen as the result of inner-European contacts, but also those beyond Europe in a TRANS-EURASIAN perspective which is stressed especially by Piirainen. Also in dealing with European lexicography and semantics, Schmitt, Merolle and Otto continue with a great number of lexical and semantic similarities and convergences explainable only in the framework of contacts, between European languages and beyond Europe in the past and the present. The complicated language of law for special purposes (Fachsprache) in all European languages is discussed by Geisler. Then the possibility of creating an inter-European language (European) from reconstructed similarities between the three major linguistic branches of the European languages (LSJ) is presented by Steller. Finally, in Chapter V, the teaching and acquisition helpers are discussed by Ferrarotti/Castorina, Cucco-Robbiolio and Ureland.

Experts on language planning, cultivation and maintenance focus here on the safeguarding measures suggested for European lesser-used-languages as formulated in the 1992 EU Charter. EUROLINGUISTICS WEST: the minority situation of the Goidelic minority languages are described by Mathuna (New Irish), Broderick, Lewin (Manx Gaelic) and MacKinnon (Scottish Gaelic); their maintenance, survival and revival are of great concern. EUROLINGUISTICS NORTH: Hjelde describes the rise and spread of Nynorsk in Norway and North America, after which Weinstock discusses the survival and maintenance of the Sami language varieties in northern Scandinavia and northern Russia. EUROLINGUISTICS SOUTH: the survival and protection of Alsatian German is discussed in detail by Klein, stressing the importance of maintaining the Alsatian dialects for the future as does Begioni describing Italian dialects in contact with Standard Italian. EUROLINGUISTICS CENTRE: the recent standardization and acceptance of Rumantsch Grischun in Kanton Grisons, Switzerland, is described by Cathomas and a similar attempt of standardization of Ladin Dolomitan, South Tyrol, is described here by R. Videsott. These two attempts contrast sharply with the demise and death of Esseker Deutsch, the urban dialect of Ossijek, Croatia, described by Kortic. Furthermore, Socanac gives the reader a survey of language policy in the Habsburg Monarchy with reference to major and minor languages in Croatia. EUROLINGUISTICS EAST: Iamshanova compares the language policy in the former Soviet Union after 1917 and the Russian Federation after 1992. EUROLEXICOGRAPHY and GLOBAL FIGURATIVE PHRASEOLOGY: Merolle and Piirainen present a vivid picture of a new approach.

Eil Elf Global English written by Cesare Gagliardi and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with English language categories.

How can you teach the English language to global English speakers? Can English be taught as an international language? Is it worth teaching? Isn't it more proper and profitable to learn a standard variety of English? How realistic and useful is the identification of an EIL/ELF variety? Can an EIL/ELF standard be identified? These are some of the questions the present volume has addressed with the contribution of some of the most qualified scholars in the field of English linguistics. The book is divided into four sections. The first part deals with the definition of English as an international language and English as a lingua franca. Section two takes six different teaching issues into consideration. The third section examines some learning issues and the last part of the volume debates the relationship between teacher and student in an English as a lingua franca environment.
