Der Terminus Globalisierung steht dabei für einen im Kern ökonomischen Prozess, in dem multinationale Unternehmen als zentrale Akteure Produktion und Absatz im weltweiten Maßstab organisieren und territoriale Grenzen eher Grenzen verschiedener Rechtssysteme aber nicht verschiedener ökonomischer Systeme darstellen. Die Durchdringung vieler Regionen durch Produkte und Produktionsstätten der multinationalen Konzerne vollzieht sich dabei nicht immer reibungslos und konfliktfrei, werden doch mit den Waren und Dienstleistungen auch Konsummuster und Werteinstellungen mit transportiert. Das Schlagwort von der MacDonaldisierung oder, wie es Benjamin Barber genannt hat, der McWorld steht dabei stellvertretend für einen Konflikt oder mindestens den Zusammenprall unterschiedlicher Kulturen und zwar zwischen marktwirtschaftlich, dem Wert der Freiheit (auch des Konsums) verpflichteten "westlichen" Einstellungen und Werten und den z. T. traditionalen Werten und Einstellungsmustern in den nichtwestlichen Ländern. Dieser Zusammenprall vollzieht sich nicht immer nur lautlos durch Werbung und schleichende Involvierung der nichtwestlichen Regionen in den Prozess der Globalisierung. Widerstand macht sich häufig immer dort breit, wo etablierte Wertesysteme durch die Konfrontation mit der Konsumwelt der McWorld in Widerspruch zu den transportierten Konsum- und Wertemustern geraten und die ökonomische Durchdringung nicht nur Gewinner sondern auch Verlierer erzeugt. In Afrika aber vor allem in den muslimischen Ländern des Nahen und Mittleren Ostens wird dieser Konflikt besonders deutlich. Die Freizügigkeit und die z. T. gewalttätige Spannung, die die Konflikthaftigkeit der Globalisierung nur allzu deutlich unterstreicht. Darum beschäftigt sich auch diese Arbeit mit dem Spannungsverhältnis von ökonomischer Globalisierung und regionalen Wertemustern am Beispiel der islamischen Länder. Dabei soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, welchen Beitrag die ökonomische Durchdringung dieser Länder zu den Abwehrreflexen islamischer Gesellschaften auf die westlichen Werte der Modernisierung leistet.
