Globalization, as the dominant force that it is, in the last decade of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st has shaped a new era in the interaction between nations, economies and peoples. But it has also fragmented production processes, labor markets, political entities and societies. At the supranational level, there is no political and regulatory counterweight to monitor this process and correct, in a fair and equitable way, the dangerous abuses that may derive from it. The logic of the global economy is deeply contradictory. It is based on the bases of speed, risk, creativity, but also on impunity in the international order, since there are no mechanisms to regulate and control the collective interests of humanity. But, above all, this logic is installed on the principle of the insecurity of people, particularly those in poor countries and sectors. Production is transferred from high-wage countries to those with low wages without entailing benefits for those countries, speculation is carried out in the financial market without considering the dangerous consequences, except for capital itself, cultural and consumption patterns are disrupted, and irreversible damage occurs to the ecological base of the planet, without concern for future generations.

While some people debate whether globalization really exists, it proceeds apace, affecting all societies. It presents us with unknown challenges and, as governments start to discuss what to do about these challenges, it is becoming obvious that globalization is not manageable. With globalization the juggernaut of the 21st century, all countries of the world become interdependent in relation to the coming energy crisis, climate change, the sharper cleavages between rich and poor countries and people, and the emergence of a multicultural social structure. This interesting and erudite book adopts a distinctive approach to the multiple dimensions of the globalization debate. The impressive coverage of philosophical thought - including Popper, Weber, Habermas, Lipset and Hobbes - makes a valuable contribution to the debates on globalization.

Perhaps no word today is used and misused more than globalization. It generally serves to refer to worldwide epoch-defining changes in the organization of societies, economies and politics. But as Petras and Veltmeyer demonstrate, the term globalization obscures much more than it reveals. In practice, globalization provides a cover for a new form of imperialist exploitation and the institution of US hegemony over a global process of capital accumulation. In the last decade, capitalists in Europe and the United States have created favourable conditions for the takeover and recolonization of economies across the developing world. International capital has managed to restore highly profitable returns on investments and operations as never before, creating islands of opulent prosperity within a sea of growing poverty and misery. In effect, this book argues that the terms globalization and imperialism are widely used as alternative frameworks for understanding the dynamics of the same worldwide developments and trends. Employing an imperialist analytical framework over that of globalization not only provides a better understanding but also points towards forces of resistance and opposition that through political action may bring about necessary change.

This book has examined some of the pressing issues and challenges related to modernity, modernization, and globalization of the 21st century. The authors of this book are a distinguished group of social scientists from America's academia, many of whom are by-cultural and educationally trained both in the East and the West. The book has used historical and comparative perspectives and many extant sources of primary data. The authors have addressed many macro-issues such as modernity and church-state separation, America's historical role in spreading global modernity, the global expansion of democracy, the rise of a global middle class, the advent of global digital connectivity, and the recent rise of right-wing political parties in the global political landscape. The authors also examined many micro-issues such as modernization and women empowerment in India and Nigeria, the growth of a unique political culture of Islam and modernism in Sierra Leone, the problem of transition to emancipative values in the post-socialist countries of Central and Easter Europe, rise in religious hostilities in South Asia, need for modernization in dealing with minority females in America's criminal justice system, and modernity and the evolution of the rights of the disabled in America. The empirical and country studies largely support the theme of the book that modernity is a cultural and civilizational model. The global modernity has been progressing across world societies for more than two hundred years. It has been particularly remarkably advancing since the second half of the twentieth century. The world capitalist economy has become more global, world democracy has expanded, the global middle class has vastly grown, women's economic and political empowerments have widened, and global digital connectivity has increased. These social and economic transformations are far more fundamental for the future progress of democracy and global modernity. The further spread of global modernity is inevitable and irreversible. The present right-wing ideologies of nativism, localism, nationalism, fundamentalism, and divisiveness in the global political trajectory are transient and temporal peculiarities.

When we think about globalization with the eyes and heart of a sovereign mission God, we must recognize the vast opportunities before us as God is moving His people around the world, bringing the gospel with them in new and different ways. Globalization and Its Effects on Urban Ministry in the 21st Century is an attempt to broaden the views of individuals and institutions alike to what God is doing around the world and how He is accomplishing His purposes through globalization. The book is organized around the four overarching themes of globalization, reconciliation, church planting, and leadership development.
