This transcultural study of cultural production brings to light the ways Spanish literature imagined China by relying on English- and French-language sources. Carles Prado-Fonts examines how the simultaneous dependence on and obscuring of translation in these cross-cultural representations created the illusion of a homogeneous West. He argues that Orientalism became an instrument of hegemony not only between “the West and the rest” but also within the West itself, where Spanish writers used representations of China to connect themselves to Europe, hone a national voice, or forward ideas of political and cultural modernity. Uncovering an eclectic and surprising archive, Prado-Fonts draws on diverse cultural artifacts from popular literature, journalism, and early cinema to offer a rich account of how China was seen across the West between 1880 and 1930. Enrique Gaspar, Luis de Oteyza, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, and lesser-known authors writing in Spanish and Catalan put themselves in dialogue with Leo Tolstoy, John Dewey, W. Somerset Maugham, Bertrand Russell, Pearl Buck, and André Malraux, as well as stereotypical figures from popular culture like Fu Manchu and Charlie Chan. Throughout, Prado-Fonts exposes translation as a technology of cultural hegemony and China as an appealing object for representation. Eugenio d’Ors (1881-1954) y José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955) son sin duda dos de las más destacadas personalidades de la generación que alcanzó la madurez intelectual a lo largo de las primeras décadas del siglo XX, protagonista de la llamada Edad de Plata y una de las generaciones más brillantes y decisivas de la cultura española. De enorme protagonismo y relevancia pública, ambos pensadores fueron además los principales configuradores e inspiradores de buena parte de las ideas compartidas por esa generación. Coetáneos y con intereses compartidos, las vidas de d’Ors y de Ortega se entrecruzaron a menudo en empresas comunes, polémicas y encuentros y desencuentros: una relación más intensa y viva de lo que a menudo se afirma. También sus respectivos planteamientos filosóficos están marcados por una gran cercanía mutua: muchos son los problemas y motivaciones compartidos por los dos, aunque también importantes sus diferencias. Este libro aborda las relaciones entre estos dos filósofos desde dos perspectivas complementarias: en primer lugar, desde la perspectiva biográfica, mostrando el gran paralelismo de ambas trayectorias vitales y sus significativas relaciones directas; y, en segundo lugar, desde la perspectiva estrictamente filosófica, dibujando sintéticamente una fuerte unidad de fondo entre sus respectivos sistemas filosóficos y a la vez dando razón de sus diferencias. Este estudio novedoso en la bibliografía existente permite, además de una mayor comprensión de cada uno de estos dos pensadores desde un ángulo poco habitual en estudios interpretativos, un acercamiento iluminador al panorama de la cultura española y al contexto filosófico europeo de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Alejandro Martínez Carrasco es actualmente profesor del Departamento de Filosofía de la Universidad de Navarra. Preserved on undated palm-leaf manuscripts, Old Sundanese texts are generally in poor condition and unavailable to a wider audience. There are limited texts in any form of Sundanese, and only limited knowledge of Old Sundanese. In presenting three long Old Sundanese poems, Noorduyn and Teeuw, in a heretofore unequalled English-language study of Old Sundanese literature, bring to the light works of importance for further linguistic, literary and historical research. The three poems, The Sons of Rama and Rawana, The ascension of Sri Ajnyana and The story of Bujangga Manik: A pilgrim's progress were undiscovered before this book. The first two were found in a nineteenth-century manuscript collection of the former Batavian Society and are now in the National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta, while the third was donated to the Bodleian Library in Oxford as early as 1627, though it was not identified as an Old Sundanese poem until the 1950s.
