I was knocked down by a shell. As I found myself laying on my back, the half-full flamethrower tank pinning me to the ground, a North Korean soldier came at me with his bayonet. In his quilted suit, he seemed to come out of nowhere. I can still see his face and smell the garlic on his breath. As he lunged at me, I was able to turn, but he stabbed my upper left arm with his bayonet. I had a double-barrel shotgun taped on the arm of my flamethrower and gave him both barrels. I think I blew him in half. The battle kept going on around me. Weapons fire was all around me, and I heard other boys being hit and falling. I laid there feeling weak as blood from my deep wound seeped out on the Korean dirt. I must have been ready to blackout when I heard a familiar voice say, “Joe, if I don’t close up that wound, you’ll die.” (Paragraph italicized.) Con Thien is a memoir/history of a much-beleaguered Marine outpost of the DMZ Throughout much of 1967, a remote United States Marine firebase only two miles from the demilitarized zone (DMZ) captured the attention of the world’s media. That artillery-scarred outpost was the linchpin of the so-called McNamara Line intended to deter incursions into South Vietnam by the North Vietnamese Army. As such, the fighting along this territory was particularly intense and bloody, and the body count rose daily. Con Thien combines James P. Coan’s personal experiences with information taken from archives, interviews with battle participants, and official documents to construct a powerful story of the daily life and combat on the red clay bulls-eye known as "The Hill of Angels." Major Harry Abbott wrote this book of his experiences as the military chaplain of Combat Command B of the 13th Armored Regiment of the 1st Armored Division during the North African campaign soon after returning Stateside. He and his fellow chaplains made ceaseless efforts to care for the spiritual and physical needs of the men in their charge. He was frequently called upon to tend to the sick and wounded, he attested to the tremendous courage displayed by the GIs of his unit as they grappled with the veteran Afrika Korps in North Africa. As alluded to in the title many of his charges faced their religious decisions differently under the fired of the deadly German 88 anti-tank gun; he assiduously noted that “there are no atheists in foxholes.” Also in charge of the burial parties sent to ensure the proper respect for the fallen, he describes this lesser known part of the US military effort.
