In 1978 the twenty-eight-year-old New Zealander, Naomi James, became the first woman to sail single-handed around the globe via Cape Horn. She did this in the fastest time ever. Naomi tells of her despair when the radio broke and she faced months of silence; of her embarrassment at discovering after three months at sea, that she had been confusing latitude with longitude; of her grief when the ship's kitten, Boris, went overboard; and of the black horror of a dawn capsize off Cape Horn.

The Postmodern Challenge written by Stråth and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-04 with Literary Criticism categories.

This volume is designed to bridge a gap in the current theoretical debate about the nature, scope and relevance of postmodern perspectives in the humanist and social sciences in Eastern and Western Europe. While the debate has been reasonably comprehensive and certainly abrasive in Western European and Anglophone countries, it has signally failed to incorporate the viewpoints of Eastern European scholars and intellectuals. Even the current appropriation of Mikhail Bakhtin as a prophet of the postmodern is, paradoxically, a monologic engagement with his thought rather than a dialogic encounter of cultures. Doubtless different historical experiences, ideology and social aspirations go some way to account for the weariness of Eastern Europe with postmodern challenge and its glad embrace by Western scholars. The volume comprises some fifteen essays by leading historians, literary theorists and social scientists from Western and Eastern Europe and America. It has a threefold aim: firstly, to illuminate the distinctiveness of current Western and Eastern European theorizing about history and society; secondly, to reveal points of tension and disagreement, and, finally, to open up a space for a meeting of seemingly incompatible worlds.

Recognition In International Law written by Hersch Lauterpacht and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11 with Law categories.

Originally published by Hersch Lauterpacht in 1947, this book presents a detailed study of recognition in international law, examining its crucial significance in relation to statehood, governments and belligerency. The author develops a strong argument for positioning recognition within the context of international law, reacting against the widely accepted conception of it as an area of international politics. Numerous examples of the use of law and conscious adherence to legal principle in the practice of states are used to give weight to this perspective. This paperback re-issue in 2012 includes a newly commissioned Foreword by James Crawford, Whewell Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge.

The Submarine written by Thomas D. Parrish and has been published by Penguin Group this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Submarines (Ships) categories.

As entertaining as a high-tech thriller, The Submarineis essential reading for understanding the last hundred years of war. It tells the story of the dreamers who first imagined submersible ships and the ingenious and practical engineers who created them; of the visionary national leaders and naval strategists who supported the development of underwater warships and the famous steel- nerved men on all sides who wielded this weapon. The Submarinedetails the role of subs in both world wars, and how, in the nuclear age, they became the most powerful weapons of war ever created—the force that paradoxically kept the peace during the Cold War without firing a single shot.
