Everyday Gifts is not a book I ever thought I would write. It was not written in a style that I had used before. It was also not a book that was preplanned. Everyday Gifts was written between two other major writing projects during a forty day "desert experience". The book began with a short verse entitled Special Places, written, I thought initially, as a birthday gift for a friend. However, that friend did not seem to appreciate, nor understand my written gift. I soon found out that Special Places was not really a birthday gift for a friend, but for me. As I finished the 25th verse, which ends this book, I realized in a profound way that this special birthday writing was really Our Lord's special birthday gift to me. It was a celebration of the "Gift of Understanding" that had been granted to me many years before. A difficult climb up a mountain of faith had opened the door to an understanding of my entire life. A spiritual light was shed upon each event. I was brought to an understanding of the reason and purpose of each occurrence. Each was put into perspective as they related to God's special plan for my life. Special Places is also about a special promise from Our Lord. A promise I only later realized was my own birthday gift from God. One day Our Lord and I together will visit "His" special places. It is a special promise and a priceless gift of a future point in time that has become permanently engraved in my heart. After the writing of Special Places came a forty day desert-like experience that led up to my 40th birthday. It was a special time when Our Lord seemed to shut out the world in a way that seemed to preserve and protect what belonged to him and me alone. It was not a time I entered into willingly. Most desert experiences, I have found are not. It seemed I was dragged into this time, and into that desert place, kicking and screaming with my toes leaving trails in the dirt. Another of Our Lord's birthday gifts I guess. As those forty days ended, however, it became very clear. The fruit produced during those forty days were works that would have taken others many years to accomplish. As I look back now I can also feel this desert-like time produced, as well, closeness to Our Lord, surrounded by a profound and deep sense of peace. It was a peace I had lost some time before when I allowed the secular world to take over my live. I have now made a solemn vow that one day I will enter another forty day desert experience with Our Lord, but this time on a voluntary basis. I will not have to be dragged there. I will enter willingly and joyfully. I only wonder if under such circumstances a similar desert experience would be as spiritually fruitful. Somehow I know that it will be.
