From its English publication in 1973, Jrgen Moltmanns The Crucified God garnered much attention, and it has become one of the seminal texts of twentieth-century theology. Following up on his groundbreaking Theology of Hope, The Crucified God established the cross as the foundation for Christian hope. Moltmanns dramatic innovation was to see the cross not as a problem of theodicy but instead as an act of ultimate solidarity between God and humanity. In this, he drew on liberation theology, and he was among the first to bring third-world theologies into a first-world context. Moltmann proposes that suffering is not a problem to be solved but instead that suffering is an aspect of Gods very being: God is love, and love invariably involves suffering. In this view, the crucifixion of Jesus is an event that affects the entirety of the Trinity, showing that The Crucified God is more than an arresting titleit is a theological breakthrough.

Description: Leaning into the Future seeks to explore what it may mean to believe in the ""Kingship"" of God and wait for his ""Kingdom"" by considering the fundamental role the Kingdom of God plays in the theology of J rgen Moltmann and in the book of Revelation. Part one is devoted to how Moltmann understands ""The Kingdom of God"" as the fundamental symbol of hope for humanity, and how he sees the presence of God's reign and kingdom in history as hidden and paradoxical. Part two turns to the way the Book of Revelation uses royal and other political language in its portrait of the future and God's presence in history. In this second part, the book also seeks to explore how Moltmann and the Apocalypse may mutually inform each other, how Moltmann may help us read this biblical book today, and how it in turn may overcome some of the weaknesses in Moltmann's proposal. Endorsements: ""There has been a movement on the part of some biblical scholars and some systematic theologians to bring their disciplines back together after a long period of alienation. This is not a matter of dissolving one into the other, but of finding ways in which serious dialogue can bear fruit. Poul Guttesen's work is an exemplary contribution to this. By engaging J rgen Moltmann's theology and the biblical book of Revelation in a mutually illuminating dialogue Guttesen is, of course, hosting such an encounter within the creative theological context of his own engagement with both. He enters with sympathy and perception into both of these visions of the kingdom of God, with their very different theological idioms, and explores both the consonances and the tensions he finds between them."" --Richard Bauckham, from the Foreword ""In recent years, there has been an encouraging resolve to bridge the gap between biblical studies and systematic theology. Poul Guttesen contributes to this movement with considerable distinction. Sensitive and qualified in both areas, he shows how enriching it is to use both Moltmann in biblical interpretation and Revelation to correct Moltmann's eschatology. Poul Guttesen combines theological competence with an awareness of the practical urgency of thinking aright about the kingdom of God."" --Stephen Williams, Union Theological College About the Contributor(s): Poul F. It begins with a survey of the doctrine of the Trinity today, which sees the main issues as being the social doctrine of the Trinity, gender and the Trinity, and the Trinity and the cross, and ends with a fascinating retrospect, 'my theological career'.

Jrgen Moltmann's life and work have marked the history of theology after the Second World War in Europe and North America like no other. He is the most widely read, quoted, and translated theologian of our time. His systematic work thrives on the cutting edge of Christian theology in the twenty-first century, challenging and stimulating a whole generation of theologians to work at theology in different and more comprehensive ways. Margaret Kohl, a translator of many of Moltmann's volumes, has chosen representative samples of Moltmann's theological writings from eight of the volumes published by Fortress Press and has written brief prefaces to each of the selections. Moltmann scholar Richard Bauckham provides an extended Introduction.

How does the eschatological future impinge on the present? Is the kingdom of God present outside the confession of Christ in movements towards social justice? Is Christian hope a stimulus to social involvement or an alternative? And how does the present impinge on the eschatological future? What is the relationship between our actions now and the new creation? Is there eschatological continuity between the two? J. rgen Moltmann, one of our most influential contemporary theologians, has had much to say both on eschatology and its relationship to mission. This book explores his thought along with evangelical responses to it. Eschatology has been central to evangelical debates about social involvement ever since the Laussanne Congress in 1974. The book examines how evangelicals themselves have related hope and mission. The book highlights the important contribution Moltmann has made while offering a critique of his thought from an evangelical perspective. In so doing, it touches on pertinent issues for evangelical missiology. The conclusion takes John Calvin as a starting point, proposing ean eschatology of the crossi which offers a critique of the over-realized eschatologies in liberation theology and triumphalistic forms of evangelicalism. iThis is a work of major importance, engaging with crucial themes and leading Christian thinkers. A must read for all reaective evangelicals. Tim Chesteris work is always good, but this is the best yet.i- Martyn Atkins Principal, Cliff College, Calver, UK Despite the attention of Moltmann and despite intra-evangelical debate on the nature of mission over the last three decades, the task of bringing Moltmann and evangelicalism into dialogue has remained on the table for some time. Tim Chester takes up the agenda. His combination of practical experience in mission and theological ability, equip him well for this task and the result is a study which brings academic reasoning to bear on Christian thought about eschatology and its vital connection with the missionary responsibility of the church. It rewards our careful attention.- Stephen Williams Professor of Systemic Theology at Union Theological College, Belfast iEschatology in relation to mission is often reduced to plans for Ohishingi the Great Commission as soon as possible, or to lurid end-time scenarios that feed our fantasy more than they fuel biblical mission. So it is refreshing to have this wide-ranging, in depth study of the theme that engages with one of the most well-known theologians of biblical hope, J, rgen Moltmann, alongside a number of renowned evangelical scholars, yet stays rooted in the text and vision of the Bible itself. This is searching theology in the service of biblical missiono as all theology ultimately should be.- Chris Wright International Director, Langham Partnership International

"This is Jrgen Moltmann's best and therefore most important book. He has substantially changed the central thrust of his theology without sacrificing its most vital element, its passionate concern for alleviation of the world's suffering." -Langdon Gilkey "The Crucified God rewards, as it demands, the reader's patient and open-minded attention, for its theme is nothing other than the "explosive presence" of the sighting and liberating Spirit of God in the midst of human life." -The Review of Books and Religion

God In Creation written by Jürgen Moltmann and has been published by Fortress Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-09-01 with Religion categories.

The title expresses the book's intention: not to go on distinguishing between God and the world, so as then to surrender the world, as godless, to its scientific 'disenchantment' and its technical exploitation by human beings, but instead to discover God in all the beings he has created and to find his life-giving Spirit in the community of creation that they share. This view¿which has also been called panentheistic (in contrast to pantheistic)¿requires us to bring reverence for the life of every living thing into the adoration of God. And this means expanding the worship and service of God to include service for God's creation.

Over the last four decades, the focus of M. Douglas Meeks' work has placed him at the center of many of the most important developments in theological reflection and education. As a political, ecclesial, and metaphorical theologian, Meeks has given witness to the oikonomia of the triune God, the Homemaker who creates the conditions of Home for the whole of creation, in critical conversation with contemporary economic, social, and political theory. The essays of this volume were written to honor Meeks, professor of theology at Vanderbilt Divinity School, by addressing the theme of God's economy of salvation from biblical, historical, ecclesial, and theological perspectives. In an age of ecological devastation and economic injustice, Meeks teaches us how to place our hope--as disciples of Jesus, as members of local congregations, as stewards of institutional life, and as global citizens--in God's power for life over death through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. These essays will serve to enliven and clarify this hope for the sake of the world God so loves. CONTRIBUTORS: Jurgen Moltmann, Timothy Reinhold Eberhart, Matthew W.
