The traditional definition of the term mission has always carried with it the connotation of redemption or salvation and because of this salvation and redemption are seen as the central tasks of mission. It is with this understanding that Piper declares that ©Ø2́Ơ¿3when this age is over and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, mission will be no more©Ø2́Ơ℗+ (2010:17). If this is so why were Adam and Eve created, and what mandate did God give them? And why will the redeemed be gathered in the New Creation (Revelation 21-22)? Are they without a task to carry out? If they all have tasks given to them by God who created and redeemed them, is it possible to come up with a definition of mission that embraces their tasks as well, thereby freeing the term mission from the redemption or the salvation connotation? This study investigates the possibility of coming up with a definition that does not carry with it the salvation or redemption connotation, and one that sets the term free, thereby locating mission in all the divisions of the biblical storyline or the biblical grand narrative: namely, the creation, the fall, the redemption and the consummation or the new creation. To do this the study takes the following as its working definition for mission: ©Ø2́Ơ¿3the reason or purpose of one℗þs existence©Ø2́Ơ℗+. Thus, mission lies in the question of why we were created. God said, ©Ø2́Ơ¿3Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth and over all the creeping things that creep upon the earth©Ø2́Ơ℗+(Genesis 1:26). Using this definition and the theme of the kingdom of God, the study demonstrates that God℗þs mission to human beings and to the whole created order comes to us through the call of Adam, the call of Abraham and the call of Jesus. The study acknowledges that these three personalities mark the three phases in God℗þs plan and purpose for mission. If these three Adams are taken out of the picture, mission cannot be fully understood. Looking at the call of Adam, the call of Abraham and the call of Jesus, the study notes that in the call of Adam God sets the pattern for his kingdom. Adam℗þs call to mission is the foundation of all that is to come. In the call of Adam, humanity is called to ©Ø2́Ơ¿3represent God℗þs kingship through the whole range of human life on earth©Ø2́Ơ℗+ (Peskett &Ramachandra 2003:37) to share in God℗þs reign. Thus, humanity is to be the people of the kingdom: ©Ø2́Ơ¿3God℗þs people in God℗þs place under God℗þs rule enjoying God℗þs blessing©Ø2́Ơ℗+ (Roberts 2002:32). All the calls to mission that follow after Adam℗þs call are about reclaiming that which was lost. In other words, these calls are more of a journey back to that which was lost; it is more a question of establishing a community that will live up to God℗þs mandate to Adam. It is from this point of view that the study takes its title ©Ø2́Ơ¿3Mission as the Creation of a God-ward Culture: God℗þs Mandate to Adam, Abraham and Jesus©Ø2́Ơ℗+. This has been humanity℗þs mandate from creation and will continue to be its mandate until the consummation. Even though God℗þs call comes on different levels and under different circumstances or stages in human history, the primary goal for mission still remains the same: that of bringing about and affirming the reign of God. This is the reason for humanity℗þs existence in every generation.

Why does the church engage in missions? Where in the Bible do we find support for this work? These questions have been asked and answered by many throughout the centuries, though rarely does the investigation span across the entire canon of Scripture. In this study Newkirk explores the breadth and depth of biblical teaching concerning God's mission for his people and the church's call to spread the gospel to the ends of the earth. By beginning with creation and ending with new creation, this study reveals that rather than simply deriving from a few "missions verses," the church's call to missions is grounded in the full spectrum of biblical revelation.

"I pray . . . that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. . . . May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me." --Jesus Christ What if? What if believers of multiple ethnicities manifested the diversity in unity for which Jesus prayed? What if largely separate, homogeneous congregations--which account for nearly 92.5 percent of all churches in the United States--increasingly became connected, multiethnic congregations? What if, at eleven o'clock on Sunday mornings--or whenever believers gather to worship--local congregations were comprised of believing whites, African Americans, Koreans, Hispanics, Romanians, Native Americans, as well as the diverse mosaic of other ethnicities represented in our increasingly multicultural society? Would this not say something about the supernatural character of the gospel of reconciliation we proclaim? Jesus believed it would. That is why after praying for such diversity in unity among his followers, Jesus Christ--the Man for all nations--extended his arms and laid down his life to make it happen. This book, God's New Humanity, examines the biblical-theological vision and motivation for living in response to Jesus' prayer.

Two rival analogies compete for our attention: the law of the jungle, and the sacred canopy. As for the former, life consists of the survival of the fittest. As for the latter, the divine mandates serve as a framework for social ethics. This is in keeping with the conviction that we live in God's world, by his grace, and for his glory. The first major segment consists of a paper trail, where the topic is explored in context of biblical narrative. The second discusses the four traditional mandates, as pertains to labor, family, government, and church. The third touches on the endowments, with reference to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. All things considered, the text is calculated to contribute to a Christian world and life view. In greater detail, the mandates serve in a dual capacity. Obviously, to establish the credentials for select social institutions, but also by insisting persons to comply with legitimate social obligations. Meant to superintend God's creation, humans continue to fall short of their appointed task. Along with the diminishing of God's glory. Calling for a commitment to the divine mandates, and their extended implications.
