Encounters With God In Medieval And Early Modern English Poetry written by Charlotte Clutterbuck and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Literary Criticism categories.

Engaging with four English poems or groups of poems-the anonymous medieval Crucifixion lyrics; William Langland's Piers Plowman, John Donne's Divine Poems, and John Milton's Paradise Lost-this book examines the nature of poetic encounter with God. At the same time, the author makes original contributions to the discussion of critical dilemmas in the study of each poem or group of poems. The main linguistic focus of this book is on the nature of dialogue with God in religious poetry, an area much neglected by grammarians and often overlooked in studies of literary style. It constitutes an important contribution to our understanding of the relationship between literature and theology.

Christian And Lyric Tradition In Victorian Women S Poetry written by F. Elizabeth Gray and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-10 with Literary Criticism categories.

Women in the Victorian period were acknowledged to be the "religious sex," but their relationship to the doctrines, practices, and hierarchies of Christianity was both highly circumscribed, which has been well documented, and complexly creative, which has not. Gray visits the importance of the literature of Christian devotion to women's creative lives through an examination of the varied ways in which Victorian women reproduced and recreated traditional Christian texts in their own poetic texts. Investigating how women poets redeployed the discourse of Christianity to uncover the multiple voices of the scriptures, to expand identity and gender constructions, and to question traditional narratives and processes of authorization, Gray contends that women found in religious poetry unexpected, liberating possibilities. Taking into account multiple voices, from the best-known female poets of the day to some of the most obscure, this study provides a comprehensive account of Victorian women's religious poetic creativity, and argues that this body of work helped shape the development of the lyric in the Victorian period.

No Other Gods written by Todd Hearon and has been published by Salmon Publishing Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Poetry categories.

No Other Gods, draws richly on Hearon's gifts as poet and dramatist. From the sonnets and nonce-forms interspersed throughout, to its central thousand-line verse monologue, No Other Gods strikes the full octave with a jazzed, symphonic roots-music. In its play of masks and voices, one meets a pantheon both sacred and profane-Mnemosyne, Priapus; memory and desire-from Pasiphae, "that daughter of the sun," to a junked-out "toothless whore named Cookie" of our own century. With mythopoetic propulsion and expanse, No Other Gods is, ultimately, a paean to the human imagination, the force that in the face of negation and nothingness, "sings well into the night."

This volume presents a newly edited critical text of the Holy Sonnets and a comprehensive digest of the critical-scholarly commentary on them from Donne's time through 1995. The editors identify and print both an earlier and a revised authorial sequence of sonnets, as well as presenting the scribal collection -- which contains unique authorial versions of several of the sonnets -- inscribed by Donne's friend Rowland Woodward in the Westmoreland manuscript.
