Solo hay una salida: dirigirse a la frontera del Danubio y pedirle asilo a Valente, emperador romano de Oriente, quien acepta: necesita hombres para sus guerras y campesinos que puedan volver a producir cosechas para el Imperio en las fértiles llanuras que yacen abandonadas. A los godos se les prometen esas tierras, trabajo y comida en un lugar que consideran luminoso y próspero. Sin embargo, la codicia de los gobernantes romanos acabará por llevar a los godos al límite, y estos se alzarán contra el Imperio. Arnulf, un joven godo; Alexandra, una muchacha constantinopolitana, y el propio emperador Valente cobran vida en este intenso relato sobre uno de los momentos clave de la historia y sobre la batalla que, para muchos historiadores, supuso el principio del fin del Imperio romano: la batalla de Adrianópolis.
