In this time of mass communication, rich people like us know very well the horrible conditions in which many poor people must live. In "Affluent in the Face of Poverty" Jos Philips wonders what we should do about poverty. The book argues that if we can do great good at little cost to ourselves, we ought to do so - and perhaps we ought to do great good even if the cost to ourselves of doing so, is not small. Also, it is argued that rich individuals like us can often, at little cost to ourselves, undertake a number of concrete actions which help to fight poverty, and that we are morally obligated to undertake acts such as giving tithes, living within our ecological footprint, and frequently buying fair trade products.

Individual quality of life has been widely used as a frame of reference guiding service provision in social and health services, as well as a critical objective or outcome of these services. Yet, the topic of quality of life in the context of child and youth care remains a relatively uncharted territory. This dissertation is based on a practice-oriented project that focuses on bridging the gap between research and practice on the topic of quality of life of adolescents in youth care. This work concentrates on the development, validation, and application of a new self-report tool, grounded in youngsters’ experiences and perceptions, to methodically and systematically assess the quality of life of adolescents in youth care from their own perspectives: the Quality of Life in Youth Services Scale (QOLYSS). The QOLYSS aims to help understand how youngsters perceive, evaluate, and make sense of varying discrete aspects and circumstances of their lives. This line of work offers valuable insights to develop person-centered planning and implement individualized support, tailored to youngsters’ characteristics, perceptions of life, wishes, and expectations. It further helps unveil critical opportunities and barriers regarding a life of quality on the different layers of everyday life of youngsters. The work presented here provides a concrete tool and a number of cross-cutting implications for research, practice and policy when aiming to build quality of life-enhancing environments for youngsters in youth care that help them (re-)claim ownership of their lives and care pathways.

In recent decades, the Netherlands and Flanders have faced challenges in how to deal with a multicultural society. As far as worldviews are concerned, the question arises whether the state should guarantee a maximum level of choice concerning religion and humanism to individuals or leave a free space to the religious and humanist communities. This study explores in how far committed Catholic, Protestant, Muslim and humanist youth agree with different models of the relationship between worldviews and the state against the backdrop of their religious and humanist beliefs, as well as social determinants. It does so by drawing on quantitative and qualitative empirical research. The analyses show that, overall, most religious and humanist youth prefer the state to guarantee a maximum level of choice to individuals, but also want the state to respect a substantial free space for communities. Above all, they want the state to treat worldviews equally before the law. Their religious and humanist beliefs are the most significant determinants. Jeroen Jans (*1990) works at the Diocese of Hasselt and is a visiting researcher at Radboud University. He performed his doctoral research at the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies.

Stories About Good Education written by Jorien Copier and has been published by Waxmann Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023 with Religion categories.

Educational professionals as well as academic scholars agree that a clear educational vision is of utmost importance for successful school leaders and schools. What this vision contains, and how it is communicated and used is less clear. This study proposes a conceptual framework for educational visions as 'stories about good education.' The qualitative empirical part investigates to what extent school leaders and school teams of primary schools in the Netherlands are able to formulate these stories about good education and how they are used in school improvement projects. The results show that while school leaders and teams vary greatly in the extent to which they articulate stories about good education, only few formulate stories that include both educational aims and design principles, which are shared in the school community, directive for the school practice and in rich interaction with cultural sources.
