In Vuur, vuur! (2021) heeft Tom Phijffer het leven beschreven van Edouard Carolus, meneer Slotering in Multatuli’s Max Havelaar, en zijn mysterieuze dood eind 1855. De geschiedenis gaat verder in Goena goena in Lebak. Over njonja Slotering en Max Havelaar. In dit vervolg wordt het verhaal verteld van Mijntje Carolus, de weduwe Slotering, het tragische lot dat haar trof en hoe dat verweven is met dat van Eduard Douwes Dekker/Max Havelaar, de opvolger van haar man die begin 1856 aankomt in Lebak, een afgelegen afdeling in Bantam (West-Java) met een arme bevolking die wordt uitgezogen door de regent Karta Nata Negara en diens schoonzoon. Njonja Slotering weet zeker dat haar man vermoord is. Phijffer stelt het zielenleven van de Indo-Europese weduwe centraal, haar leef- en denkwereld. Door goena goena als het inheemse geloof in het onverklaarbare te plaatsen tegenover de angst onder Europese ambtenaren toont Phijffer het belang aan van de interactie tussen deze njonja Slotering als ‘inlandse dame’ en de verindischte Dekker. Hij waarschuwde zelf eind 1859 in een ingezonden stuk in de Amsterdamsche Courant tegen het toepassen van westerse principes op oosterse zaken, vóór de verschijning van zijn vlammend protest tegen het koloniaal beleid. De werkelijkheid is veel complexer dan kan worden beschreven en er zijn vele perspectieven denkbaar. De Havelaar-geschiedenis moet telkens opnieuw worden verteld en in de juiste historische context worden geplaatst, opdat niet wordt vergeten waarom Multatuli opstond, waarom Dekker Multatuli wérd en waarom hij het al in Lebak was. Met Goena goena in Lebak levert Phijffer tegelijkertijd scherpe kritiek op de moderne postkoloniale literatuurwetenschap.

During a relatively short period, from around 1765 to 1780, the Dutch lawyer Jean Theodore Royer (1737-1807) was intensely engaged in the study of Chinese culture. Befriended VOC officials and their Chinese relations in Canton collected Chinese objects for him and helped him with his greatest ambition: the composition of a Chinese dictionary. The objects were given a home in his museum on the Herengracht in The Hague. Better than travel journals, they gave a picture of life in China in Royer’s time. Because the selection was largely made by modest Chinese traders, the collection does not so much give a picture of the material culture of the Chinese elite, but rather that of the ambitious, upwardly-mobile world of small traders and craftsmen. These are mostly ephemeral objects that have rarely been preserved, but they came to The Hague, thanks to Royer and his Chinese contacts. A bequest from his widow then ensured that the collection ended up in two Dutch museums: Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where the objects are still present today.
