Buch von DuW entstand zwischen dem 16. IV. und dem 7. VII. 1811, wie wir dem Tagebuch Goethes1 entnehmen können. Über Goethes historische Quellen für die Beschreibung der Kaiserkrönung Joseph II. sind wir durch die Ausleihverzeichnisse der Weimarer Hofbibliothek unterrichtet. E. Beutler3 hat das Buch prägnant charakterisiert: ,,Dieses 5. Buch ist ... eine Meisterleistung Goethes, ja es ist nicht nur eine der vollendetsten Partien in DuW, sondern ein Kronjuwel der Goethschen Altersprosa schlechthin, nicht an Gehalt, aber in der Kunst des Erzählens, in der Mischung von Intimität und Glanz." Das 5. Buch kann als ein Musterbeispiel für jene Anforderungen gelten, die Herder, und darauf fußend Goethe, an Inhalt und Stil einer gelungenen Autobiographie stellten. Inhaltlich zerfällt das Buch in zwei Geschichten: Die Kaiserkrönung Joseph II. am 27. März 1763, mit den Tagen davor und danach sowie die Gretchen-Novelle. Die erste interessant, als ein kulturhistorisches Dokument - jedoch nicht historischer Bericht-, da diese Kaiserkrönung die letzte, in Frankfurt stattfindende Krönung des Alten Reichs war, die zweite eine ganz intime Schilderung der ersten Liebe Goethes, zu einem Mädchen namens Gretchen, von der weiter nichts bekannt ist, als was Goethe uns in DuW über sie berichtet. Das Meisterliche des 5. Buches besteht in der komplexen Verschränkung beider Erzählstränge miteinander und den vielfältigen Beziehungen, in die das erzählendes Subjekt (Goethe als junger & alter) dazu gesetzt wird. Damit verwirklicht er seine, in der Kritik an von Müllers Autobiographie geäußerten, Anforderungen (große & kleine Welt, Wechselwirkung derselben aufeinander, Ich und die anderen, Wechselwirkungen; Liebe als Gegenseitige Erziehung · Metamorphosegedanken). Die nachfolgende Arbeit wird versuchen, die kunstvollen Inszenierungen dieses Abschnitts von Dichtung und Wahrheit auf dem Hintergrund des neuen, von Herder und Goethe erarbeiteten Konzepts der Autobiographie im Zeitalter der Aufklärung darzustellen.
