According to the Turkish government, the Gülenist movement is at the heart of the failed coup attempt of 15 July. Fethullah Gülen, the movement's leader is a former ally of the Turkish president and one of the country's most powerful and in uential forces. With the help of the Turkish government, the Gülen movement successfully created a deep state within the Turkish bureaucracy and persecuted political enemies in show trials in 2008-2013. The movement is opaque and secretive in the state bureaucracy. There is enough evidence linking followers of Gülen to the coup but evidence pointing to Fethullah Gülen himself remains scant. Turkey extradition request for Fethullah Gulen will continue to create a turbulence in Turkey relationship with Washington. For the US, this is a legal matter; for Ankara, a prerequisite for partnership. The Turkish government has embarked on a massive purge to "clean the state", involving tens of thousands of state employees, banks, and companies. In its quest to protect Turkish democracy by purging Gülenists, the Turkish government needs to make sure it does not destroy the frail democracy it is trying to save.

Turkey’s democracy has historically suffered from continuous coup attempts which aimed directly to overthrow the elected governments of the time. At least four successful coups have occurred in a period of 50 years and in July 15 2016 the latest attempt was executed. However, unlike the previous coups, the plotters failed to achieve their goals on the night of July 15, resulting in a triumph for Turkish unity and democracy. As such, the July 15 coup attempt can be considered as an example per se of people power which is worth studying. July 15 Coup Attempt in Turkey: Context, Causes and Consequences presents different perspectives focusing on political, economic, sociological and psychological aspects of the factors leading up to, the events during and aftermath of this historic date. Academicians and journalists have aimed to examine in detail the coup attempt and to present an accurate account of July 15. History and current events are analyzed through an academic perspective, creating a fuller picture to better understand this most recent attempt to compromise the will of the Turkish people. "On July 15, 2016, a faction of the Turkish military tried to overthrow the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The attempt failed. The Turkish government blamed the attempted coup on Gülenists, followers of an Islamist movement led by Fethullah Gülen, who had helped Erdoğan and his AK Party get elected and bring an ostensibly 'soft' version of Islam into the secular Turkish government. In alliance with the AK Party, Gülenists over time became widely represented in various government institutions, including the military and police. This volume focuses on the Gülen Movement and its possible role in the failed coup, providing historical and sociopolitical context for what may have led to this conflict. Editors Yavuz and Balcı were among the first to study the movement from its beginning. They and other contributors have spent time in Turkey, Central Asia, and the Balkans examining various dimensions of Gülenist activity as the movement became a major economic and educational force in Turkey and elsewhere. Startled by the 2016 coup attempt, a group of scholars who had studied the Gülenists came together to discuss how and why the once-restrained movement became belligerent opponents of Erdoğan's government. This book is a product of their exchanges and it addresses questions such as: what did researchers fail to see in their earlier studies and how will this major disruption in Turkey affect the future of the movement?"--Provided by publisher.

A photo frame can sometimes loudly shout out the truth that hundreds of striking words may have difficulty in elucidating. As AST, we wanted to utilize the power of images to demonstrate the violations of rights that we have also tried to announce with reports and special studies. This book in your hand focuses on people from all walks of life who have been subjected to the ruthless persecution of the regime in Turkey during the last decade. Especially after the coup attempt of 15 July 2016, it is a reality that many people, who have never been involved in violence in their lives, have been subjected to monstrous pressure and discrimination just because of their social affiliations. The state apparatus, which has been rapidly evolving towards a one-party dictatorship, overturned all the rules of law in the ensuing period, shelved the constitutional rights and decriminalized legal acts that could never be considered a crime within the framework of universal principles, and even made a blatant attempt to retroactively exploit these newly-defined crimes to sentence people. As part of the mass cultural genocide perpetrated against the members of the Gülen Movement, also known as Hizmet: * Investigations were launched against more than 1.5 million people for terrorism allegations, * 300,000 people were detained, * More than 100,000 people were arrested. * 234,419 passports revoked, * More than 17,000 women were arrested, * Nearly 900 babies had to grow up in prison with their mothers. * Hundreds of thousands were laid off from their jobs, * Properties of thousands of people were forcibly confiscated. As AST, we wanted to record the intense oppression and persecution and to demonstrate the unlawful and anti-democratic practices of the political regime in Turkey and make a note of history with 159 photographs, some of which could be the symbols of this period. For example, among many others, the photos featured Zabit Kişi, who was tortured for 108 days and lost 30 kilos due to intense torments; Bilal Konakçı, a bomb disposal expert, who was sent to prison on account of the “membership in a terrorist organization” years after he became blind and had a 98-percent disability when a bomb exploded while he was trying to defuse it; or Ms. Hacer, whose hospital room door was well guarded by a police team that was there to detain her soon after she gave birth. We were unable to demonstrate all the atrocities due to the physical limitations of this book. Yet the book will achieve its purpose if it can interpret the sufferings of the innocent masses, albeit with a weak voice.

This volume is an attempt to contextualise the coup attempt of 15 July 2016 in Turkey, within the framework of militarism and masculinities. The immediate aftermath of the 15 July in Turkey witnessed confusion, contestation and negotiation among different narratives, until a hegemonic version was superimposed on the collective memory as part of official history building. This project is an attempt to bring a fresh and critical perspective by compiling together analyses from various disciplines of political science, media and film studies, literature, sociology and cultural studies. Several chapters of this volume delineate the paradox of “victorious militarism,” meaning that despite the failure of the coup, its aftermath has been shaped by a new wave of state-sponsored gendered militarism, with the establishment of a regime of “state of emergency.”

This book deals with the disinformation on Turkeys failed coup attempt in July 2016. The night of 15 July 2016 was long for Turkey. A military coup was in action. Some soldiers -- also known as FETÖ terrorists -- declared a military takeover on national TV, holding the trembling anchorwoman at gun point while tanks rolled in the streets, bulldozing cars and civilians alike, helicopters rained down bullets on unsuspecting protestors; access to the Bosporus Bridge was blocked, fighter jets began to fly very low, Turkish Parliament was bombed with impunity. With the dawn, it became apparent the perpetrators of the nights bloody coup attempt had destroyed many government buildings and killed some 250 people and wounded more than 2000. Turks unprecedented bravery and sacrifice in defense of democracy, freedom, and country against a military intervention was an exemplary act of civil defense, but it is seldom recognized or appreciated as such in the mainstream Western media.

Since 2005, Turkey's relations with Africa have demonstrated a growing dynamism. This development was accompanied by greater diplomatic activism both bilaterally and multilaterally. Proactive Turkish diplomacy was rewarded in 2008, when, largely thanks to the votes of African countries, Turkey won a seat on the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member. This development was the outcome of a meticulous trust-building policy characterized by the simultaneous commitment of governmental and nongovernmental actors. Among the latter, Hizmet, better known as the Gülen movement--an Islamic transnational religious and social organization that has developed a multi-sectoral network in Turkey and abroad--played a pivotal role in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Between 2003 and 2014, it has held a special place in the formulation and implementation of Turkey's public diplomacy in Africa, above all in the education sector, by means of a network of several schools. For many years, Turkey has taken advantage of that network, using it to achieve many political and economic gains. However, after the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016, which, according to Ankara, was orchestrated by the movement, Africa became a further theater of internecine fighting.
