Excerpt from Good Words for 1876 They were the last words she uttered before she fell asleep, and the first when she awoke in the morning. The prison bell aroused her as usual, and she lifted herself wearily from her hard mattress to begin another day of prison-life. But that was only for an instant. The glad thought flashed, like a sudden gleam of light, through her heart, that to-day she was free, to - day she would see her little girl again. The warder brought a bundle containing her own clothes, and Carried away her prison dress. How her hands shook, as she unfolded the gown she had been wearing when she was taken up for the crime she had committed. All the long years seemed to be wiped out like a dream when one awakes. The blue dress, with that little hole torn in it, which Rosy had made whilst romping, how familiar, yet how strange it was to her! She had always been fond of gay colours and smart dresses 3 and now she had her own clothes again, she felt quite a different woman from the dull, broken-spirited prisoner she had been only yesterday. There was no glass in which she could look at herself; she had not seen her own face all this long and dreary time, ex cept in little fragments of broken glass in which she could hardly see the faintest image of herself. But she felt as young, now she had her blue gown on, as when she had first crossed the gloomy threshold of the county jail. Excerpt from Good Words: For 1872 The reader shall at once be introduced to the landlord, and informed at the same time that, in so far as he may be interested in this story, he will have to take up his abode at the Lion d'or till it be concluded not as a guest staying loosely at his inn, but as one who is concerned with all the innermost affairs of the household. He will not simply eat his plate of soup, and drink his glass of wine, and pass on, knowing and caring more for the servant than for the servant's master, but he must content himself to sit at the landlord's table, to converse very frequently with the landlord's wife, to become very inti mate with the landlord's son - whether on loving or on unloving terms shall be left en titely to himself - and to throw himself, with the sympathy of old friendship, into all the troubles and all the joys of the landlord's niece. If the reader be one who cannot take such a journey, and pass a month or two without the society of persons whom he would define as ladies and gentlemen, he had better be warned at once, and move on, not set ting foot within the Lion d'or at Granpere.
