Der Band eröffnet die neue Reihe des Mediävistenverbandes, in der interdisziplinäre Studien aus dem Bereich der Mittelalterforschung veröffentlicht werden. Er dokumentiert ausgewählte Beiträge des 14. Symposiums des Verbandes, das vom 27. bis 31. März 2011 in Jena stattfand. Im Zentrum stehen die mehr oder weniger expliziten Verhältnisbestimmungen des Menschen zu Gott, von denen die monotheistische mittelalterliche Welt in all ihren Bereichen geprägt ist, im Christentum ebenso wie in Islam und Judentum. Dabei geht es um die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Gott und Mensch, Gottesbild und Menschenbild, Schöpfer und Kreatur sowie göttlicher und menschlicher Schöpfung beziehungsweise Schöpferkraft. Beiträge aus Literatur-, Musik- und Kunstwissenschaft reflektieren unterschiedliche Formen der Kommunikation zwischen Mensch und Gott, historische Hinführungen zur Geschichte von Konzepten und Vorstellungen sind ebenso vertreten wie klassische theologische oder philosophische Studien. So erscheinen die Formen und Inhalte der Interaktion zwischen Gott und Mensch im Mittealter in all ihrer Fülle.

Das vorliegende Werk nähert sich diesem wichtigen Text aus quellenkritischer Perspektive und kommt zu neuen Erkenntnissen über den Verlauf der Auseinandersetzung von Papst und Kaiser sowie über das Weltbild der mittelalterlichen Kurie.

The scientific debates on border crossings and cultural exchange between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have much increased over the last decades. Within this context, however, little attention has been given to the biblical Exodus, which not only plays a pivotal role in the Abrahamic religions, but also is a master narrative of a border crossing in itself. Sea and desert are spaces of liminality and transit in more than just a geographical sense. Their passage includes a transition to freedom and initiation into a new divine community, an encounter with God and an entry into the Age of law. The volume gathers twelve articles written by leading specialists in Jewish and Islamic Studies, Theology and Literature, Art and Film history, dedicated to the transitional aspects within the Exodus narrative. Bringing these studies together, the volume takes a double approach, one that is both comparative and intercultural. How do Jewish, Christian and Islamic texts and images read and retell the various border crossings in the Exodus story, and on what levels do they interrelate? Despite its relevance to the subsequent development of Western Islamic studies, the intellectual contribution of early modern Catholicism is still an under-researched area. The aim of this volume is to fill this gap, offering a series of essays dealing with the study of the Qur’an and Arabic language in early modern Catholic Europe. Focusing on the circulation of manuscripts, translations and printed books, the essays highlight how Catholic Orientalism contributed to the birth and spread of Western Islamic studies, although sometimes it was still directed towards religious polemics. Among the protagonists of this period of Islamic studies, the volume will focus on Catholic priests, missionaries, religious orders (Jesuits, Franciscans, Carmelites) Eastern Christians, converts, and other prominent figures in the Catholic culture of the time.
