Die Liturgiekonstitution des Zweiten Vatikanums wollte als Teil der Liturgiereform die Feier des Wortes Gottes stärken und mit der "sacra Verbi Dei celebratio" eine zusätzliche Feierform gefördert wissen, die an alte Traditionen einer eigenständigen Wort-Gottes-Feier anknüpft. Sie kann von Priester, Diakon oder sonstigen Beauftragten geleitet werden. Das Konzil intendierte eine generelle Etablierung der Wort-Gottes-Feier im Gemeindeleben. Unter dieser Voraussetzung würde sie sich gerade dort bewähren, wo sonntags keine Eucharistiefeier möglich ist. Ein "Ersatz" der Eucharistiefeier war aber, wie Meurer zeigt, gerade nicht im Blick der Konzilsväter. Diese Ersatzfunktion wurde nach dem Konzil praktisch zum Regelfall. Die primäre Intention des Konzilsbeschlusses wird hingegen bis heute weitgehend nicht entsprechend umgesetzt. Damit fällt auch ein neues Licht auf zentrale Fragen um die tägliche oder sonntägliche Liturgie der Kirche. Welche Feierformen als Liturgie angesprochen werden können, was zur sakramentlichen Liturgie der Kirche gehört, welche Bedeutung dem gemeinsamen Priestertum zukommt, was als Proprium der Wort-Gottes-Feier anzusehen ist, welche Kriterien für oder gegen eine Verbindung mit der Kommunionfeier sprechen und vieles mehr: Diese Diskussionen sind künftig vorsichtiger und mit der hier ausgeführten klaren Begrifflichkeit zu führen.

Darüber hinaus verdient das Kunstwerk als Traualtar der Eltern Johann Sebastian Bachs besondere Beachtung. Das Retabel ist krönender Abschluss weiterer Ausstattungsstücke aus der Spätrenaissance, die alle dem lutherischen Bildprogramm verpflichtet sind, darunter Kanzel (1598), Taufstein (1608) und Epitaphe aus der Werkstatt der Erfurter Meister Friedemann. Das Ensemble »bildet eine weit über Erfurt hinaus hochbedeutsame künstlerische, ikonographische und in ihren Aussagen sich ergänzende Einheit« (Peter Poscharsky). Der Erfurter Reformationsaltar zeigt in seinen neun Holztafeln neun Stationen der Vita Jesu. 21 Autoren – unter ihnen Theologen, Journalisten, Schriftsteller, Philosophen, Sozial-, Theater- und Kunstwissenschaftler – betrachten in ihren Beiträgen differenziert und umfassend die farblich gestalteten Schnitzwerke und berücksichtigen dabei die zugeordneten Bibeltexte in der Lutherübersetzung. Die einfühlsamen Fotografien des Erfurter Fotografen Falko Behr lassen den Betrachter an den Details und dem Reichtum der Figurendarstellung teilhaben.

On 13 June 1525, Martin Luther married Katharina von Bora, a former nun, in a private ceremony officiated by city preacher Johann Bugenhagen. Whilst Luther was not the first former monk or Reformer to marry, his marriage immediately became one of the iconic episodes of the Protestant Reformation. From that point on, the marital status of clergy would be a pivotal dividing line between the Catholic and Protestant churches. Tackling the early stages of this divide, this book provides a fresh assessment of clerical marriage in the first half of the sixteenth century, when the debates were undecided and the intellectual and institutional situation remained fluid and changeable. It investigates the way that clerical marriage was received, and viewed in the dioceses of Mainz and Magdeburg under Archbishop Albrecht of Brandenburg from 1513 to 1545. By concentrating on a cross-section of rural and urban settings from three key regions within this territory - Saxony, Franconia, and Swabia - the study is able to present a broad comparison of reactions to this contentious issue. Although the marital status of the clergy remains perhaps the most identifiable difference between Protestant and Roman Catholic churches, remarkably little research has been done on how the shift from a "celibate" to a married clergy took place during the Reformation in Germany or what reactions such a move elicited. As such, this book will be welcomed by all those wishing to gain greater insight, not only into the theological debates, but also into the interactions between social identity, governance, and religious practice.
