Was ist der Mensch? Theologische Antworten auf diese Grundfrage der Philosophie und Anthropologie stehen unter dem Vorzeichen, "dass Gott seiner gedenkt" (Psalm 8,5). Als Gottesgedanke ist der Mensch wesentlich Sprachgeschöpf, angeredet und zur Antwort herausgefordert. In Freiheit soll er seine Bestimmung zur Menschlichkeit als Ebenbild Gottes verwirklichen. Die hier vorgelegten Studien zu einer theologischen Lehre vom Menschen nehmen biblische Grundtexte auf und lassen sich von Luthers Thesen über den Menschen anregen und leiten. Von daher ergeben sich Antworten auf Streitfragen der aktuellen Diskussion, insbesondere zu den Fragen nach Anfang und Ende des Lebens, zum Verhältnis von Leib und Seele, Sprache und Vernunft sowie zum Verständnis der Freiheit. Im Zentrum steht eine Besinnung auf das Herz als Sitz der geistlichen Tugenden von Glaube, Liebe und Hoffnung. [The Human Person as God's Thought. Anthropology in Theological Perspective] "What is man"? Theological answers to this basic question of philosophy and anthropology have to consider that God is "mindful of him" (Psalm 8,4). As a thought of God the human person is essentially a creature of language, called and challenged to a response. Being free, he has to realize, as image of God, his vocation to be human. The present studies on a theological anthropology refer to basic biblical texts and are inspired and guided by Luther's anthropological views. This leads to answers to current controversial issues for instance regarding the questions of the beginning and end of life, the relation between body and soul, language and mind and the conception of freedom. The central focus is on a reflection of the heart as seat of the spiritual virtues of faith, love and hope.

This book, one of the earliest by Christos Yannaras, was first published in 1967 and has become a contemporary classic. Yannaras begins by outlining Heidegger's analysis of the fate of western metaphysics, which ends, he argues, in a nihilistic atheism. Yannaras's response is largely to accept Heidegger's analysis, but to argue that, although it applies to the western tradition of what Heidegger calls "onto theology" (which regards God as a 'being', even if the highest), it does not take account of the Orthodox tradition of apophatic theology, of which Dionysius the Areopagite is a pre-eminent example. A God 'beyond being' escapes the criticism of Heidegger, and provides an alternative to Heidegger's nihilistic conclusion.

A common basis for the project on which this volume is based is that one cannot understand religion and ethics without paying attention to the different contexts in, and by means of which, these cultural elements are expressed. This approach makes both religion and ethics liquid, and allows us to see them as based on specific contingencies rather than as expressions of some essential features. The changing societal and cultural conditions in late modern Western societies pose new challenges for established religion, theology and ethics: Not only does religion itself appear to be in some kind of crisis, but also many of the established ways of understanding and doing religion, theology and ethics appear obsolete, inadequate or dated. Against such a backdrop, the articles in the present volume represent attempts to rethink theology and religion with regard to these late modern conditions. The volume is the result of a joint undertaking of two research groups, one based in Åbo, Finland, and the other in Oslo, Norway, which have since 2006 focused on exploring the contextual character of theology in understanding both Christian belief and Christian ethics. The challenge of the idea that Christianity appears in new ways – and in “new” contexts, and of investigating what that means, is pursued in various ways.

Dietrich Bonhoeffers Hermeneutik ist damit als Hermeneutik der Responsivität zu bezeichnen.Nadine Hamilton zeigt, dass die Bibel für Dietrich Bonhoeffer nicht nur Gegenstand der Hermeneutik sein kann; vielmehr muss das in der Bibel Bezeugte in spezifischem Sinne die Verstehensprozesse selbst steuern. Ein Verstehen der Schrift, das der Wirklichkeit in Christus entspricht, kann nur eine Auslegung der Schrift sein, die das hörende Subjekt mit einbezieht und so die Existenz des Menschen selbst von diesem Text her auslegt. Dieses Geschehen aber ermöglicht erst die neue Wirklichkeit zwischen Gott und Mensch; der Glaube, der aus dem Hören der Schrift kommt, ist ein neues Sich-selbst-Verstehen vor Gott.Wo nämlich der Rezipient allererst zum Rezipierten wird, ereignet sich Gott in der Welt, genauer im Menschen; hier wird die Bibelauslegung zum sakramentalen Geschehen des Wortes Gottes, das den Menschen in seinem ganzen Leben zur Antwort aufruft: zur aktiven Teilhabe am Reich Gottes.Bonhoeffers theologische Hermeneutik ist damit zugleich eine anthropologische. Weil sich in der Erkenntnissuche des Menschen, der von der Schrift ergriffen wird, ein Subjekt- und darin Objektwechsel vollzieht, der Mensch also nicht die Schrift auslegt, sondern die Schrift den Menschen, ist zugleich von einer hermeneutischen Anthropologie zu sprechen. Bonhoeffers Hermeneutik ist damit beides: anthropologische Hermeneutik und hermeneutische Anthropologie, weil ein Verständnis des Wortes Gottes (und damit Gottes selbst) nicht ohne ein Verständnis des Menschen vor Gott geschehen kann, das den Leser verwandelt.Nadine Hamilton erhielt für diese Arbeit den Bonhoeffer-Forschungspreis 2015 sowie den Staedtler-Promotionspreis 2015.
