First published in Germany in 1985, Geschichte der deutschen Literaturkritik was quickly recognized as the most original and comprehensive study to date of a proud critical tradition including such giants as Lessing, Goethe, and Heine. Now translated into English, it will serve as a model for a new approach to literary history in America and elsewhere, one emphasizing the connections of criticism with other public discourse. The editor, Peter Uwe Hohendahl, has provided an introduction and a chapter, "Literary Criticism in the Epoch of Liberalism,"translated by Jeffrey S. Librett. Filling in the history of German criticism from the Enlightenment to the present are Klaus L. Berghahn of the University of Wisconsin, "From Classicist to Classical Literary Criticism, 1730-1806," translated by John R. Blazek; Jochen Schulte-Sasse, University of Minnesota, "The Concept of Literary Criticism in Romanticism"; Russell A. Berman, Stanford University, "Literary Criticism from Empire to Dictatorship, 1870-1933,"; translated by Simon Srebrny; and Bernhard Zimmerman, University of T_bingen, "Developments in German Literary Criticism from 1933 to the Present," translated by Franz Blaha.

Shakespeare Verbatim challenges traditional Shakespeare scholarship through a study of its textual primacy in the late eighteenth century. The book's examination of earlier treatments demonstrates that concepts now basic to Shakespeare studies were once largely irrelevant. Only with EdmondMalone's 1790 Shakespeare edition do such criteria as authenticity, historical periodization, factual biography, chronological development, and in-depth readings become dominant. However, their emergence then must not be seen as the overdue installation of proper scholarly and literary procedures, but rather as a specific historical response to the problem the Shakespeare corpus has posed since its definition by the 1623 Folio. The remarkable efficacy of Malone's apparatus over the past two hundred years testifies not to its `truth', but rather to its endorsement of a continuing Enlightenmentepistemology irreconcilable with the past linguistic and mechanical practices it purports accurately to reproduce. This challenging book has both practical and theoretical implications for Shakespeare studies in the 1990s and beyond.

Excerpt from Schiller's Poems: Selected and Edited With Introduction and Notes Sonnets, as a poetic name for his landlady, Luise Doro thea Vischer, a widow with two children and consider ably older than himself. But the concrete object of the adulation expressed in these poems is really a matter of indifference; they were evidently inspired in part by the extravagantly idealizing amatory dreams of a youth who has grown to manhood in monastic seclusion with out the least experience of love, in part by his tendency to soar aimlessly through the boundless spaces of the eternal and the infinite. If in the Phantasie an Laura (no. 6) Schiller identifies his love with the cosmic force that holds the universe together, in Laura am Klam'er he hears, as in a trance, the multitudinous voices of nature and even the voice of God in the tones that come from Frau Vischer's piano; all creation reels about the love - rapt poet in Die seligen Augenblicke.
