Marcel Boldorf führt zwei in der Forschung stets isoliert behandelte Themenfelder sollten zusammen: die Entnazifizierung und die Kaderauswahl im Rahmen der Errichtung einer zentralen Planwirtschaft. Aus dem Handeln der Führungskräfte werden Rückschlüsse auf Werte, Regeln und Grundsätze der Governance gezogen. In vier Stahlwerken und zwei großen Spinnereien betrachtet der Autor Entscheidungsprozesse der Werkleitungen und die Frage, inwieweit ihnen mit zunehmendem Zentralismus noch Handlungsspielräume verblieben. Als ehemals führende Kriegsindustrie war die Eisen- und Stahlbranche der SBZ/DDR ein machtpolitisch sensibler Faktor, der an der Basis der auf Autarkie zielenden Wirtschaftsordnung stand. Im Gegensatz dazu wurde die Textilindustrie im staatlichen Plansystem systematisch benachteiligt und zur Verarbeitung von Ersatzstoffen gedrängt. Aus einer komparativen Perspektive leistet das Buch einen Beitrag zum einem vertieften Verständnis des ostdeutschen Transformationsprozesses nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg.

This book breaks new ground, taking business history where it has only reluctantly gone in the past. The introduction reviews the small, but growing, literature, based on fresh archival materials, which investigates the history of business organisation in the Global East, or the Second World in the Cold War. It argues that there is already a great variety of approaches that go beyond the view of the Soviet-style firm as primarily a production function. Focusing on East Germany and Yugoslavia, seven chapters showcase new directions in the field, and demonstrate that the combination of business history with other historical and disciplinary approaches can help unpack the diversity of historical experiences, explain geographical variances, and offer new avenues for synthesis. This book explores the changing nature of social movements and economic elites in post-Second World War Europe. In the years following 1945, Europe faced diverse challenges connected by the overriding question of how the reconstruction of the continent should proceed. For the Central Powers, the implementation lay in the hands of the Allied occupying forces who organised the process of denazification and the establishment of a new economic order. In countries without military occupation, there was a deep gap between the new governmental forces and the former collaborators. In both cases, social movements which were formed by anti-fascists on the left of the political spectrum assumed the task of social reorganisation. The chapters in this book explore the discourses about economic systems and their elites which moved to the fore across a range of European countries, uncovering who was involved, what resistance these social movements faced and how these ultimately failed in the West to bring about change, while in Eastern Europe Stalinism forcibly imposed change.
