There is an enormous concern today about the Federal budget, and almost all of it begins and ends with the deficit as the problem. But as eminent economist Herbert Stein argues in Governing the $5 Trillion Economy, the solutions most often proposed are escapist. Freezes, across-the-board cuts, or constitutional amendents all fail to take into account the real needs of the nation and, worse yet, focus too narrowly on the Federal budget. Stein contends that it is not enough for the government to manage only the Federal budget. The government, in cooperation with private planners, must begin to manage the whole output of the nation, which currently runs at almost five trillion dollars. It is only when planners can make choices between allocating resources either from the public sector (the Federal budget) or the private sector (industry or individuals), Stein says, that those decisions that benefit the nation as a whole will be made. For instance, health care planners should be able to choose between appropriating Federal money for Medicare and mandating company-paid employee health care plans. This would allow the government to reduce expenditures while still meeting its goal of better health for all citizens. Governing the $5 Trillion Economy is not a partisan argument for a specific set of economic policies, but an insightful prescription for improving the policy process no matter what the aims of the government. Written by one of America's leading authorities on national economic policy, this trenchant volume will be required reading for planners in government and the private sector as well as anyone interested in the future of the American economy.

The e-book titled “Mukul Asher on Economic Reasoning and Public Policy: Case Studies from India", edited by V.K. Ahuja & Ajay B. Sonawane is a collection of recent columns authored or co-authored by Professor Mukul Asher on applying economic reasoning to public policies in India. As India progresses towards USD 5 trillion economy, and as it addresses its socio-economic challenges, public policy discussions which are based on appropriate context-specific analytical frameworks and concepts, using empirical evidence in a judicious manner to advance public interest, have become vital. The book also helps fill a gap in the literature as analysis of India’s Post-2014 public policies and initiatives have not received deserved interest from the academics, think tanks, and researchers. This e-book represents a small step towards redressing this imbalance. The DSPPG plans to publish a series of books on a diverse set of public policy issues India, with a view to improve the quality of public policy education and dialogue in India. The present e-book is first in the series. All books are to be uploaded on the Website of Delhi School of Public Policy and Governance (DSPPG), University of Delhi and made freely available to all. Legitimacy And Effectiveness In Global Economic Governance written by Biagio Bossone and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-03 with Law categories.

Coping with the challenges of global economic governance is a topical issue of the current international agenda, and the object of a vivid debate among scholars and policy-makers. The international financial and economic crisis that erupted in 2007 reveals the fallibility of the neoliberal paradigm that has dominated the world economic landscape for the last quarter of a century; regulatory and supervisory institutions have disclosed their weaknesses, and markets have shown their limits in dealing with the rational allocation of risks, and their lack of resilience to shocks. This book offers a comprehensive view of this matter, examining the dialectic and fluid relations between State sovereignty, supranational rules and the role of markets. The opportunity to deal with economic and regulatory challenges through the lens of legitimacy and effectiveness is the fil rouge of the co-authors’ original contributions and the inner-sense of the book. This critical perspective results particularly in investigating gaps and ambiguities of the institutional framework currently underpinning the major international economic organisations (IMF, WTO, G20, EMU), in re-discussing the State’s regulatory role in coping with the challenges of the global economy, and in studying the contradictory interactions between financial paradigms and sustainability with regards to economic development policies.

To Govern The Globe written by Alfred W. McCoy and has been published by Haymarket Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-16 with History categories.

In a tempestuous narrative that sweeps across five continents and seven centuries, this book explains how a succession of catastrophes—from the devastating Black Death of 1350 through the coming climate crisis of 2050—has produced a relentless succession of rising empires and fading world orders. During the long centuries of Iberian and British imperial rule, the quest for new forms of energy led to the development of the colonial sugar plantation as a uniquely profitable kind of commerce. In a time when issues of race and social justice have arisen with pressing urgency, the book explains how the plantation’s extraordinary profitability relied on a production system that literally worked the slaves to death, creating an insatiable appetite for new captives that made the African slave trade a central feature of modern capitalism for over four centuries. After surveying past centuries roiled by imperial wars, national revolutions, and the struggle for human rights, the closing chapters use those hard-won insights to peer through the present and into the future. By rendering often-opaque environmental science in lucid prose, the book explains how climate change and changing world orders will shape the life opportunities for younger generations, born at the start of this century, during the coming decades that will serve as the signposts of their lives—2030, 2050, 2070, and beyond.

When there was a change of regime at the centre in 2014, his interest emerged to watch the Modi government that came with an absolute majority. His inquisitive mind started watching the government since the beginning to know how radically they mobilized the people to get 31 per cent and 37 per cent of total votes cast in 2014 and 2019. He kept on studying the promises Modi made and his failures in fulfilling them, yet able to continue in the 2019 general election. The magic wand was not the economic performance and his so-called welfare measures, but the oratory marvel of mobilizing people and dividing the people into religious and divisive lines of caste, creed, sex, and region. The author's first monumental work was on “Economic Consequences and Overall Implications of BJP Government during 2014-19.” This work is an extension of nine years of his critical study of the style of Modi's functioning. Modi is very apt in promising but very renege in implementing. But once someone achieves power, he does not want to leave. Modi is also not unlike this. Although Modi had a very humble start, he has developed an authoritarian style in his functioning. The author observes that his charisma is waning and the coming general election would be most difficult for him to continue as PM, lest he improves his style of functioning.
