The age at which people first marry has been increasing in the US. The greatest increase, though, has been among those with a graduate education. In part, this reflects a concern that marriage may interfere with one's studies making it more difficult to graduate or complete a degree in a timely manner. This paper addresses this issue, by looking at how graduate outcomes differ by the student's gender and marital status when they enter graduate studies. I find that being married has no affect on female student's outcomes but positively affects the outcomes of male students. In fact, male students who are married at the start of graduate school are X% less likely to attrite in any given year and complete their degree on average .23-.36 years quicker than male students who start graduate school single. I find no significant difference in outcomes by gender among single students.
