Measuring ASTM grain size by automatic image analysis is often made difficult by the inability of the image analyzer to detect grain boundaries accurately. For this reason, a logic-based method for grain boundary reconstruction has been developed. ASTM G was measured at various grain sizes both before and after image processing. Automatic image analysis was used to measure the grain size on actual microstructures as well as on standard grain size charts that had grain boundaries intentionally removed. ASTM G was measured by both planimetric and intercept methods. The grain size calculated on the basis of area was much more sensitive to incomplete boundaries than was the calculation based on intercepts. Nevertheless, the software was able to restore the boundaries, and the correct grain size was calculated.

Recrystallization And Grain Growth written by Brigitte Bacroix and has been published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-10-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). Recrystallization and grain growth, together with phase transformations such as precipitation, are the fundamental processes of microstructural evolution which take place during the thermomechanical processing of engineering materials. They are of major scientific interest and are of great importance in a wide range of industrial applications. One of the main goals of this two-volume set is to show how to cover the entire set of reactions governing recrystallization and grain growth during industrial processing – termed through process modelling.

Until recently, engineering materials could be characterized successfully using relatively simple testing procedures. As materials technology advances, interest is growing in materials possessing complex meso-, micro- and nano-structures, which to a large extent determine their physical properties and behaviour. The purposes of materials modelling are many: optimization, investigation of failure, simulation of production processes, to name but a few. Modelling and characterisation are closely intertwined, increasingly so as the complexity of the material increases. Characterisation, in essence, is the connection between the abstract material model and the real-world behaviour of the material in question. Characterisation of complex materials therefore may require a combination of experimental techniques and computation. This book publishes papers presented at the Third International Conference on Computational Methods and Experiments in Material Characterisation.Topics covered include: Composites; Ceramics; Alloys; Cements and Cement Based Materials; Biomaterials; Thin Films and Coatings; Advanced Materials; Imaging Analysis; Thermal Analysis; New Methods; Surface Chemistry, Nano Indentation; Continuum Methods; Particle Models; Damage Mechanics; Innovative Techniques; Stochastic Methods.

Metallic films play an important role in modern technologies such as integrated circuits, information storage, displays, sensors, and coatings. Metallic Films for Electronic, Optical and Magnetic Applications reviews the structure, processing and properties of metallic films. Part one explores the structure of metallic films using characterization methods such as x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. This part also encompasses the processing of metallic films, including structure formation during deposition and post-deposition reactions and phase transformations. Chapters in part two focus on the properties of metallic films, including mechanical, electrical, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties. Metallic Films for Electronic, Optical and Magnetic Applications is a technical resource for electronics components manufacturers, scientists, and engineers working in the semiconductor industry, product developers of sensors, displays, and other optoelectronic devices, and academics working in the field. Explores the structure of metallic films using characterization methods such as x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy Discusses processing of metallic films, including structure formation during deposition and post-deposition reactions and phase transformations Focuses on the properties of metallic films, including mechanical, electrical, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties
