Making a corpus of Latin grammatical papyri is not simply a contribution to Latin Papyrology, but especially a decisive element for our knowledge of ‘manuals’ in schools in the Eastern Roman Empire, their linguistic theories and the way in which they used to ‘write’ Grammar. A diachronical and diatopical analysis, in parallel with the known (Tèchnai and the) Late Antiquity’s Artes, will support a new step while making a corpus of Grammaticae Romanae Fragmenta. In 1979, Alfons Wouters published a corpus containing twentyfive grammatical papyri. Only one was Latin, the P.Lit.Lond. 184 (Brit. Libr. inv. 2723) + P.Mich. VII 429, which contains an Ars concerning the parts of speech and other grammatical themes, written on the verso of a military document (II a.D.). Today, after more than thirty years, new documents can be added to Wouters’ corpus, and the book inglobes all of them. Artes Grammaticae in frammenti collects and scrutinizes all the known Latin and bilingual (Greek-Latin and Latin-Greek) grammatical texts on papyrus in order to add further tesserae in the mosaic of our knowledge of forms, practices and circulation of Latin grammar and Roman education.

This is an innovative and distinctive comparative monograph about new word creation in the different varieties of Catalan. In eight chapters, it provides a panoramic analysis of the neologisms documented by the NEOXOC network. Each chapter is dedicated to the qualitative and quantitative analysis, as well as the comparative territorial analysis, of neologisms, differentiated by formation sources: suffixation, prefixation, neoclassical compounding, vernacular compounding and syntagmatic compounding, Spanish loanwords, English loanwords, truncation and semantic change. The object of this volume is the study of missionary translation practices which occur within a colonial context of political domination and spiritual conquest. Missionary translation becomes especially manifest in bilingual ethnographic descriptions, in (bilingual) catechisms and in the missionaries’ lexicographic condensation of bilingual dictionaries. The study of these instances permits the analysis and interpretation of their guiding principles, their translation practice and underlying reasoning. It also permits the modern linguist to discern semantic changes that can be revealed in these missionary translations over certain periods. Up to now there has hardly been any study available that focuses on translation in missionary sources, of the different traditions in the Americas or Asia. This book will fill this gap, addressing the legacy of missionary translation practices and theories, the role of translation in evangelization and its particular form in the context of colonialism, the creation of loans from Spanish or Latin or equivalents or paraphrases in the indigenous languages in texts and dictionaries as translation strategies followed in bilingual editions. The process of acculturation and transculturation imposed by European religious systems is noted. This volume presents research on languages such as Nahuatl, Tarascan (Pur’épecha), Zapotec, Tamil, Chinese, Japanese, Pangasinán, and other Austronesian languages from the Philippines.
