L’autore ha cercato di colmare una lacuna riscontrata nel settore degli studi sui grammatici del primo Cinquecento italiano, l’assenza cioè di un sistematico confronto tra i due testi delle Regole di Giovan Francesco Fortunio, prima grammatica a stampa del volgare e della trattazione grammaticale contenuta nel terzo libro delle Prose del Bembo. Si è voluto pertanto ricostruire la storia della composizione delle due opere per porre in evidenza, attraverso un riesame delle norme che quei testi prescrivono, l’effettivo rapporto che tra essi intercorre. Lo studioso che legge le due opere, fondate entrambe sul principio classico dell’imitazione, può così rendersi conto che, mentre nel Fortunio il discorso rimane costantemente ancorato al punto di vista grammaticale, con la registrazione delle voci volgari che procede secondo gli schemi della grammatica latina, diverso è l’orientamento del Bembo grammatico, che è quello di fissare le regole elaborate attraverso lo studio degli autori prediletti, con la mente però sempre rivolta al patrimonio delle loro idee, alle poetiche diverse, ai moti dello spirito che la mediazione stilistica traduce nelle forme del verso e della prosa.
