La metropolización se entiende como el fenómeno en que una unidad urbana estructura, controla y especializa un territorio. En Latinoamérica, las principales áreas metropolitanas surgieron a partir de un crecimiento urbano explosivo de ciudades industriales, que fueron absorbiendo centros urbanos más pequeños hasta conformar sistemas policéntricos. Estos, actualmente, evidencian marcados fenómenos de fragmentación y dispersión. En las últimas décadas, en Chile, se han ido conformando otras unidades urbanas de importancia que no responden a la misma morfología, sino que se configuran como áreas metropolitanas desde la estructuración funcional de ciudades intermedias. Estas entidades no responden necesariamente al mismo modelo que los referentes tradicionales del subcontinente y se requiere un estudio particularizado de sus fenómenos. Se estudia el caso del Gran La Serena, un área metropolitana postindustrial, conformada por las unidades urbanas de La Serena y Coquimbo. Se indaga en la configuración socioespacial de su espacio de conurbación en el periodo 1952-2012, identificando patrones estructurales distintos de los caracterizados en la literatura, con una tendencia de las clases altas a localizarse en el espacio central del sistema urbano y una reducción de la distancia geográfica entre zonas de grupos socioeconómicos altos y bajos. Desde el enfoque de la especificidad espacial del urbanismo, y el poder explicativo del espacio (Soja, 2000), se buscan factores que expliquen la evolución del fenómeno en el caso de estudio, tanto en los factores contextuales, como espaciales; los que han delineado la evolución de su proceso de metropolización, desencadenado en la década de 1990, y cuyas bases se encuentran en las acciones del Plan Serena de mediados del siglo XX.

Chile is a privileged country in terms of water resources, with an average annual runoff of approximately 50,000 m3/person. However, water availability varies enormously in space, as less than 1,000 m3/person are available for more than 50% of the population. The temporal and spatial distribution of water resources is driven by processes highly variables across a country with different climates explained not only by a large range of latitudes (from 17° to 56° south), but also the presence of the Pacific Ocean and the Andes with peaks up to 7000 m. This geography makes of Chile a true natural laboratory in which water is essential for the society and the economy of the country. The relevance of water resources for the country has become even more significant in the context of a mega-drought that has affected practically the entire territory in recent years, although large floods such as those in Atacama 2015 and 2017 also take place periodically.
