Text into Image: Image into Text is a truly interdisciplinary publication. Whilst all of the contributions focus upon the central problem of the relationship between literature and the visual arts -- one which has lost nothing of its fascination as the debate has expanded in numerous forms from antiquity into the realm of postmodern theory -- they come from contributors working in a large number of different areas. Represented are academics from the worlds of German Studies, French Studies, English Studies, Art History and Film Studies. Given their backgrounds each of the contributors can offer a different perspective upon the core issue of translation between media, but perhaps most valuable is the com-bination of perspectives made possible by the arrangement of the volume into sections dealing with aspects of the image/text debate. In the same way that the volume gains by ranging across traditional disciplinary boundaries so it also gains from dealing with a wide range of historical material from -- to take only one possible route -- Baroque icono-graphy through Romantic imagery to Expressionist agony.

This book presents the first focused investigation of Francisco Goya's (1746–1828) graphic output. Spanning six decades, Goya’s works on paper reflect the transformation and turmoil of the Enlightenment, the Inquisition, and Spain's years of constitutional government. Two essays, a detailed chronology, and more than 100 featured artworks illuminate the remarkable breadth and power of Goya's drawings and prints, situating the artist within his historical moment. The selected pieces document the various phases and qualities of Goya's graphic work—from his early etchings after Velázquez through print series such as the Caprichos and The Disasters of War to his late lithographs, The Bulls of Bordeaux, and including albums of drawings that reveal the artist’s nightmares, dreams, and visions.

This exhibition catalog highlights a recent gift of works on paper to the Art Institute of Chicago from the Gecht family, longtime Chicago collectors. The catalog comprises 135 drawings, prints, and sculptures from the collection, all of which embody a broad definition of Modernism. The book spans two centuries and contains artists such as Cezanne and Van Gogh as well as Mark Rothko and Philip Guston. Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, and Picasso form the backbone of the collection with nearly 30 works of art apiece. Suzanne Folds McCullagh (curator of prints & drawings, Art Inst. of Chicago) provides a short introductory essay that tracks the evolution of the collection. Authored by a bevy of contributors, the well-written entries maintain a consistent tone and quality and strike a good balance between biographical information and interpretations of the work of art itself. While the Gecht collection is certainly quite a boon for the institute, it is not comprehensive enough in itself to make the catalog essential for all art libraries. It does, however, belong on library shelves with strong modern art and graphics collections.-Kraig A. Binkowski, Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington 135 colour illustrations

An art collector who was a patient at the Amsterdam Medical Center once expressed his gratitude with a donation of several works of art, the seed for the extraordinary modern art collection that now flourishes at the Amsterdam Medical Center. Since it began seriously cultivating its art collection in the 1980s, the Center has amassed approximately 5,000 works by Dutch and Dutch-resident artists. The Amsterdam Medical Center Art Book is an extraordinary showcase of the Center’s rich and diverse collection, which focuses on Dutch art from the 1950s through the 1970s. The book highlights several stunning examples within the collection of such benchmark art movements as CoBrA, Mixed Media Art, Zero Art, and New Figuration. Other fascinating pieces featured in the book were created by artists-in-residence, who were allowed to draw from live scenes in the Center’s operating theater and maternity ward. This volume ultimately presents a fascinating survey of Dutch post-war art, with over 100 vibrant color illustrations that include works by Eugene Brands, Karel Appel, Constant, Marc Mulders, Roy Villevoye, and Marlene Dumas.

The Reception Of The Printed Image In The Fifteenth And Sixteenth Centuries written by Grażyna Jurkowlaniec and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-01 with Art categories.

This book examines the early development of the graphic arts from the perspectives of material things, human actors and immaterial representations while broadening the geographic field of inquiry to Central Europe and the British Isles and considering the reception of the prints on other continents. The role of human actors proves particularly prominent, i.e. the circumstances that informed creators’, producers’, owners’ and beholders’ motivations and responses. Certainly, such a complex relationship between things, people and images is not an exclusive feature of the pre-modern period’s print cultures. However, the rise of printmaking challenged some established rules in the arts and visual realms and thus provides a fruitful point of departure for further study of the development of the various functions and responses to printed images in the sixteenth century. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, print history, book history and European studies. The Drawings Of Stefano Da Verona And His Circle And The Origins Of Collecting In Italy written by Evelyn Karet and has been published by American Philosophical Society this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Art categories.

In this comprehensive catalogue of the work of the 15th-century painter and draftsman, Stefano da Verona (1375-ca. 1438), Karet reviews past scholarship and corrects old misunderstandings that produced an inconsistent, heterogeneous and misinformed corpus. Her attributions are based on stylistic arguments, technical analysis, and the relationship of the drawings to a limited number of secure paintings by this important Late Gothic North Italian painter. The restricted but sound body of works Stefano da Verona executed is compiled in rich catalogue entries that include discussions of style, iconography, patronage, paper and sketchbook analysis, important issues of workshop production and of the history of drawings and collectionism.
