The future flashed before my eyes in all its pre-ordained banality. Embarrassment, at first, to the exclusion of all other feelings. But embarrassment curled at the edges with a weariness ... I got a joke in. 'So – we'd better get cooking the meth,' I said to the Poet. In August 2014, Jenny Diski was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and given 'two or three years' to live. She didn't know how to react. All responses felt scripted, laden with cliché. Being a writer, she decided to write about it (grappling with the unoriginality even of this), and also to tell a story she has not yet told: that of being taken in, aged fifteen, by the author Doris Lessing, and the subsequent fifty years of their complex relationship. In September 2014 Jenny Diski began writing in the London Review of Books, describing her experience of living with terminal cancer, examining her life and history with Doris Lessing: the fairy-tale rescue from 'the bin' as a teenager, the difficulties of being absorbed into an unfamiliar family and the influence this had on her. Swooping from one memory to the next – alighting on the hysterical battlefield of her parental home, her expulsion from school, stacking shelves in Banbury and the drug-taking twenty-something in and out of psychiatric hospitals, Diski paints a portrait of two extraordinary writers – Lessing and herself. From one of our most original voices comes a book like no other: a cerebral, witty, dazzlingly candid masterpiece about an uneasy relationship; about memory and writing, ingratitude and anger; about living with illness and facing death.

After the unforeseen death of her mother in 2010, author Laura Steenrod is left feeling grief stricken and vulnerable without the safe haven their relationship provided. Please rescue me! It is in that moment she realizes that she is surrounded by survival experts. Gratitude shares the story of Steenrods own struggles to manage crippling anxiety and grief with the stories of five remarkable dogs. When the clock struck midnight on January 1st, 2020 we had no idea the challenges that we were to face that year. News of a worldwide Pandemic and ordered shelter in place with only essential services operational spread like wildfire creating uncertainly and fear of the unknown. I am an empath, a seeker of positivity and each day those emotions depleted with every news report and indefinite isolation. I felt the need to hold myself accountable to hang onto that gratitude by sharing our personal journey on social media everyday, and everyday finding the gratitude within those challenges. As with all children, on March 17th, my Autistic son was sent home for remote learning. Their routines disrupted and desperately needed services came to a screeching halt. He requires 1:1 instruction and that became my priority. A few days later, all non essential businesses were closed, indefinitely. The self employed were left with no income until months later when unemployment was approved for us. I am self employed. My husbands office closed and he was working remotely, as were most people, for over a year. My sons Autism requires structure, routine and services to thrive. All of those necessities were gone leaving a confused, scared and anxious child resulting in uncontrollable behaviors that required love, patience and priority. He feared this virus taking me away from him. So much so that his worries effected his entire being. I am his person. I found myself as mom, wife, teacher, therapist, confidant and business owner while my 93 year old mom recuperated from a life threatening surgery in a nursing home. Nursing homes were being hit hard by this virus and taking many loved ones with it. The responsibilities and concerns became overwhelming. Each day I sought out something, anything, to be grateful for. With no where to go we spent a lot of our time outdoors after remote learning. We soaked up the sun, blue skies, hearing the birds chirping, looking for someone, anyone to be out walking, loving sidewalk chalk messages of hope, seeing hearts in window, smiling at fellow walkers while keeping our distance and looking for the helpers. Some days I had to dig deep, very deep, for gratefulness. It was in those moments, days, and months that we worked through the seemingly impossible and missed seeing our loved ones as we watched the world crumble to illness and countless deaths. As my prose merely began as a way to hold MYSELF accountable from falling through the cracks, I found that many not only began following my stories but looking forward to them. So much so that I was encouraged to put them into a book to help others see the positivity in the most challenging of times while navigating isolation and Autism. My goal is help bring the sun into your cloudiest of days through commonality, gratitude, positivity and mindfulness.

If you've ever been ugly dumped, knocked off your feet, financially devastated, stunned by a potentially fatal diagnosis, or paralyzed by fear, you'll find comfort and strategies for surviving and eventually thriving in this book. Bunny Terry experienced all of these and was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer on a day when she thought she was the healthiest person in the world. Her surprising journey through the maze of illness, treatment, surgery, and recovery, along with her stubborn daily practice of gratitude, even when she wanted to throw her gratitude journal off a cliff, will leave you laughing, crying, and hopefully feeling grateful, even when it seems impossible. The author heard her father say daily, "If life were any better, I'd have to be two people," even in moments when things seemed especially dire. He said it when he was losing the farm, when she was an unwed pregnant college student, when she was getting her third divorce, and even when she was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. Putting that practice of positivity and gratitude to work when she was ill and struggling with chemo was no easy feat, but it frequently felt like the only alternative to outright despair. In unexpected, simple, and profound language, Bunny's transparent sharing of her cancer, her vulnerability, her physical pain, and her gratitude story will move you to tears at the same time that it gives you tools for saving your own life with a gratitude practice.
