This book is the third in a series that will examine the development and life of Hull General Cemetery. The series will look at the many facets of this intriguing site; its history, management, social aspects, finances and much more. It will also explore the lives and history of some of the more important inhabitants of the site. Utilising documents and archive material that has never been seen in public before it is hoped that the series will be a useful tool for both the student and local historian not only of this site but for the Victorian Cemetery in general. It is hoped that it will be of use to the family historian too. This volume examines the concept of the public grave and how it was not simply the preserve of the pauper but offered a decent burial to a much wider proportion of the town's population than is generally thought. The relationships that the Cemetery enjoyed with the two local Workhouses during its life, the strains within these relationships, and how the economy of the Cemetery relied upon these relationships is explored. The extent of the burials from the Workhouses are quantified. Finally, two aspects of the Cemetery are explored. The catacombs of the Cemetery are examined. Their design, purpose, occupants and eventual fate are discussed. The Eleanor crosses that adorn three of the graves in the Cemetery are discussed and their inception, makers and which graves they stand upon is outlined along with the personal stories that prompted their erection.

Crosses in the Wind, first published in 1947, is the first-hand account by the commander of the 611th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company during the Second World War in Europe. In an under-reported but vital part of the war effort, the Graves Registration Service was responsible for the massive task of collecting fallen soldiers, identifying remains, preparing bodies for internment, forwarding personal effects to families, and establishing military cemeteries across Europe. In addition to providing an overview of the major European battles, the book focuses on the activities of author Major Joseph Shomon, from the formation of his company at Fort Francis E. Warren in Wyoming, followed by the unit's transfer to England where they began processing D-day casualties, and then continuing eastward across Europe with the advancing U.S. armies. The book closes with the Company in southern France awaiting deployment to the Pacific theater, but after the atomic bomb drops on Japan and the subsequent ending of the war, the unit is broken up, with some troops returning to Germany and others to the U.S. Includes 30 pages of photographs and maps.

Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... xxiv poppies and barbed wire just behind the line where our men fought on July i there is a soldiers' cemetery which has become to me a garden of memories. It was a sunny morning when I first saw its white crosses and scarlet poppies. I was on my way to the adjoining village to arrange a service for one of my regiments which had been billeted there for fatigue duties. There was no sign of a cemetery until one got in front of it, for the side view was obstructed. Suddenly rows of little white crosses glinting in the sun startled the sight, and awoke the imagination to scenes of battle and sudden death. The appeal of the crosses was irresistible, and I jumped off my bicycle to look at the names. There were soldiers from many counties lying there, and upon some cross might be a name familiar and loved. Who could tell? In the far right-hand corner a burial party was at work. I asked what had happened, and they told me. An hour before, the Germans had shelled the village, and four men had been killed. At breakfast the four lads were happy and bright, eating heartily and laughing merrily. By dinnertime they were wrapped in their blankets and lying silent in death. At teatime they were sleeping in the graves which comrades had dug for them. As I entered the village I saw the deep hole in the road where the shell had burst. There had been no time to fill it in, and I had to wheel my bicycle round it. The Sunday following we had our service on the stretch of grass within the cemetery. It did not seem a melancholy place for worship. Somehow death seems different out here. It looks more natural, for our burials have more of simple faith and less of pagan pageantry. We use no coffin, wear no black, shed no tears, and lay upon the graves no dying...
