The past decade has witnessed new interpretations of the great themes of traditional European garden art in profusion. Drawing on his intensive studies of some 30 influential European projects, Udo Weilacher presents a panorama of the most significant developments since the publication of his groundbreaking work Between Landscape Architecture and Land Art in 1996. Examples of the cooperation between landscape designers and architects are given special attention in case studies taken from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In addition, US landscape designer Kathryn Gustafson, artists such as Dani Karavan, and the architectural theorist Charles Jencks are featured, along with their European works.

Coup D Il At Bel Il And A Great Number Of European Gardens written by Charles Joseph prince de Ligne and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Architecture categories.

Charles-Joseph, seventh Prince de Ligne, Field marshal, Grandee of Spain, Knight of the Golden Fleece, sovereign of the minuscule county of Fagnolles in the Ardennes, and author of the Coup d'Oeil sur Beloeil, was born in 1735. Claiming descent from Charlemagne, intimate with royalty from Paris to Vienna to St. Petersburg, he traveled widely, associating with such luminaries as Madame de Stal, Voltaire, Frederick the Great, and Rousseau until the eighteenth-century douceur de vivre came to an abrupt halt with the French Revolution. Forced to flee his Belgian estates, he became an exile in Vienna, where he died in 1814, having attempted to support himself by writing. But Ligne's real passion was for his garden at Beloeil, which he described as he lay dying as "the handsomest garden in Europe . . . if it weren't for Versailles." This new critical edition presents the 1795 version of Ligne's masterwork, his garden treatise on Beloeil and the great gardens of Europe. Designed by Wolfgang Lederer and elegantly illustrated from sources Ligne himself might have known, this extensively annotated translation will introduce a new generation of readers to Ligne's intelligence and wit as well as his ideas on gardens. The charm and vivacity of the Prince's anecdotes and pithy observations lead one through his own beloved gardens to a Grand Tour of European culture in the eighteenth century. "These pages were composed in happy days, when the world was not sullied with crime and when our blood and tears had not been shed. I wrote names then that I no longer have the strength to utter. Now everything is altered. But that does not change the intent of my work, which was simply to give counsel and example to others. These are not the tales of a traveler but rather the precepts of a gardener."--Preface to the First Edition

The garden is both a space for private reflection and a stage for public expression, providing a mirror to an epoch's tastes, customs and culture. This lavishly illustrated book of some of the finest gardens in Europe takes the reader on a journey through more than 500 years of history, providing an insight to the people and times that shaped each magnificent garden. From seventeenth-century Levens Hall in the English countryside, with its fantastic topiary using hornbeams and box-trees, to the splendid Versailles, its statues and fountains praising the glory of the Sun King; from the geometry of Italian Renaissance gardens to the picturesque Giverny Garden, 'painted' by Paul Cezanne with strokes of iris and waterlilies; from the magical Alhambra in Granada, its refined fountains the legacy of the Arabs, to the modern Vigeland Park in Oslo, a true open-air art museum created in the 1950s - these are just some of the 31 spectacular European gardens presented here. With informative text providing useful information for those planning a visit and beautiful photography throughout, this book is a charming guide to the Europe of the past.
