The Great Reading Disaster written by Mona McNee and has been published by Andrews UK Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-20 with Education categories.

By the late 1980s half the nation's children were receiving eleven years of progressivist schooling that failed to give them even the elementary basis of education that was completed by the age of seven in earlier days. This great reading disaster was caused by the ‘look–say' method of teaching, which presented whole words not individual letters. This book explains the causes and provides the solution to this problem. In 2006, the Secretary of State for Education and Skills has ordered schools to use the phonic method but there seems little evidence that its implications are properly understood or that any serious re-training programme for teachers is being put in place. The authors believe their explanations and recommendations in this book are thus needed just as much as ever.

A book that brings the habits of reading to life Great readers are not made by genetics or destiny but by the habits they build—habits that are intentionally built by their teachers. The early formal years of education are the key to reversing the reading gap and setting up children for success. But K-4 education seems to widen the gap between stronger and weaker readers, not close it. Today, the Common Core further increases the pressure to reach high levels of rigor. What can be done? This book includes the strategies, systems, and lessons from the top classrooms that bring the habits of reading to life, creating countless quality opportunities for students to take one of the most complex skills we as people can know and to perform it fluently and easily. Offers clear teaching strategies for teaching reading to all students, no matter what level Includes more than 40 video examples from real classrooms Written by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo, bestselling author of Driven by Data and Leverage Leadership Great Habits, Great Readers puts the focus on: learning habits, reading habits, guided reading, and independent reading. Support current educational initiatives with a ready-to-use tool that will help you with selection, motivation, and skill building relative to titles published within the last five years. New demands by Common Core and other national and state standards mean teachers and librarians need support in pairing high-interest content with skill building that speaks to those standards. This hands-on, research-based resource will help. Covering 100 titles, it guides you to topics, themes, values, and activities that meet national and state standards. The book's organization—by genres, topics, and themes—will enable librarians to serve customers with specific requests and help teachers build thematic units. Focusing on recent young adult fiction and nonfiction (2010–2014), the guide offers a succinct plot summary, links to popular themes and genres, indication of reading levels, and an engaging booktalk for each title. It also includes guidelines for further promoting each book and extending knowledge through discussion. The author, a former middle and high school teacher, demonstrates how you can foster close reading through paraphrasing, comparison, and response and explains how to strengthen critical thinking among teens. Lists of related titles and notes on gender appeal can be used for readers' advisory.

How To Get A Good Reading From A Psychic Medium written by Carole Lynne and has been published by Weiser Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-15 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

How to Get a Good Reading from a Psychic Medium was born from Carole Lynne's desire to help her own potential clients, plus the thousands of people interested in contacting those who have gone to live in the world of spirit, know what to expect from a reading with a medium. For the grieving, the curious, the skeptical but desperate, Lynne offers straightforward, plain talk about what mediums can and can't do, and how to prepare to get the most out of an encounter with the world of spirit. Chapters on "The great and not such great reasons to see a medium," "Where to find a good medium," and "How long is a reading and what does it cost" explain the very practical elements of dealing with a spirit communicator. "This is not a scientific book," writes Lynne. "I'm not going to try to prove anything to you." But she does dispense invaluable advice about getting the most out of working with a medium. What questions should you ask? When should you listen? When should you talk? What can you do with the information you get? Answers to all these questions, and so many more. There is no other place where readers will find such useful advice about how to evaluate a reading and what to do with the evidence and advice they might receive. Unlike many, Lynne doesn't set herself up as a guru and advises against treating any reading from any medium that way. Her wise counsel: Trust yourself. You are the one who knows best what this reading means in your life.

What Makes This Book So Great written by Jo Walton and has been published by Macmillan + ORM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-21 with Literary Criticism categories.

As any reader of Jo Walton's Among Others might guess, Walton is both an inveterate reader of SF and fantasy, and a chronic re-reader of books. In 2008, then-new science-fiction mega-site Tor.com asked Walton to blog regularly about her re-reading—about all kinds of older fantasy and SF, ranging from acknowledged classics, to guilty pleasures, to forgotten oddities and gems. These posts have consistently been among the most popular features of Tor.com. Now this volumes presents a selection of the best of them, ranging from short essays to long reassessments of some of the field's most ambitious series. Among Walton's many subjects here are the Zones of Thought novels of Vernor Vinge; the question of what genre readers mean by "mainstream"; the underappreciated SF adventures of C. J. Cherryh; the field's many approaches to time travel; the masterful science fiction of Samuel R. Delany; Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children; the early Hainish novels of Ursula K. Le Guin; and a Robert A. Heinlein novel you have most certainly never read. Over 130 essays in all, What Makes This Book So Great is an immensely readable, engaging collection of provocative, opinionated thoughts about past and present-day fantasy and science fiction, from one of our best writers. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

A Dominican-born academic tells the story of how the Great Books transformed his life—and why they have the power to speak to people of all backgrounds What is the value of a liberal education? Traditionally characterized by a rigorous engagement with the classics of Western thought and literature, this approach to education is all but extinct in American universities, replaced by flexible distribution requirements and ever-narrower academic specialization. Many academics attack the very idea of a Western canon as chauvinistic, while the general public increasingly doubts the value of the humanities. In Rescuing Socrates, Dominican-born American academic Roosevelt Montás tells the story of how a liberal education transformed his life, and offers an intimate account of the relevance of the Great Books today, especially to members of historically marginalized communities. Montás emigrated from the Dominican Republic to Queens, New York, when he was twelve and encountered the Western classics as an undergraduate in Columbia University’s renowned Core Curriculum, one of America’s last remaining Great Books programs. The experience changed his life and determined his career—he went on to earn a PhD in English and comparative literature, serve as director of Columbia’s Center for the Core Curriculum, and start a Great Books program for low-income high school students who aspire to be the first in their families to attend college. Weaving together memoir and literary reflection, Rescuing Socrates describes how four authors—Plato, Augustine, Freud, and Gandhi—had a profound impact on Montás’s life. In doing so, the book drives home what it’s like to experience a liberal education—and why it can still remake lives.
