Launching a spaceship, monitoring it in orbit, and bringing it back down to Earth--and doing it all while keeping the crew safe--is a huge undertaking. Engineers and physicists have to carefully design each component. For example, a space shuttle has a blunt nose because this helps keep the worst of the heat of atmospheric reentry away from the body of the shuttle. This volume examines the science behind the design choices of rockets, shuttles, space stations, and other spaceships. Informative sidebars and full-color photographs augment the engaging text to help readers understand why each design element is crucial.

THERE ARE A LOT MORE SPACESHIPS WHICH HAVE BEEN BUILT AND WILL BE BUILT THAN YOU MIGHT THINKThis book is the seventh volume of "The Living in Space Series". Each volume focuses on one particular technology of living in space. In this book the focus is on spaceships used to access and travel in space. In my research I was pretty amazed at how many spaceships have been designed, the large number available in the current era, and that many more are already on the drawing boards. Some spaceships like the Space Shuttle seemed like a great idea back in the 1970s and 1980s. But due to the compromises in design were very expensive for each flight and kind of dangerous too. Even though the Space Shuttle was flown for over 30 years it was eventually cancelled because of cost issues. The newer transportation systems focus on lowering costs through reusability. This will lead to a much better long term paradigm for expanding people's entry into space because of the lower costs reusability provides.I also need to determine what types of ships to include in this book. What is a valid spaceship? My decision was to use the Von Karmen Line which says that a spaceship flown higher than 50 miles (80 km) has entered space.Using the Von Karmen Line includes one manned device-the X-15 experimental rocket plane as a spaceship although most people wouldn't think so.Lastly, I've included some notional spaceship designs which might be used to travel to Mars or other bodies in the Solar System. Get this book to keep up to date with how man has, now does, and plans for spaceships to travel in space

This new book goes behind the scenes on the award-winning TV series Battlestar Galactica to discover the concepts behind the designs of dozens of spaceships! Battlestar Galactica debuted on TV in 1978 and acquired a phenomenal following, breaking new ground for TV drama and winning several awards. It returned to TV screens in 2003 in a critically acclaimed reimagined series, with Time Magazine naming it one of the 100 Best TV Shows of All Time. This behind-the-scenes guide looks at the creation of the ships in both the original and the reimagined series, including vessels of the ragtag fleet and those of the Cylon enemy. Featuring artwork from the groundbreaking first series and the 2004 reimagined series, this volume explores the art of ship creation from the first sketches to the finished designs of the modelmakers. Covering 18 key ships from the two shows, including the Galactica itself, the Vipers and the Cylon Raiders, the pages are packed with original concept art from designers Eric Chu, Andrew Probert and legendary artist Ralph McQuarrie.

WOOSH! is a collection of personal spaceship sketches created by entertainment designer Lorin Wood as he decompressed on his couch after a long day at work. While "analog" in its execution, there's nothing dated about his vision of the future. His detailed ships will have you dreaming of space exploration with every line and brushstroke. And artists, hobbyists, and anyone who enjoys sketching will also appreciate Wood's tips on what traditional tools to use and how to render.

Spacecraft Structures and Mechanisms describes the integral process of developing cost-effective, reliable structures and mechanical products for space programs. Processes are defined, methods are described and examples are given. It has been written by 24 engineers in the space industry, who cover the themes of (1) ensuring a successful mission, and (2) reducing total cost through good designs and intelligent risk management. Topics include: Introduction and requirements (development process, requirements documentation, requirements definition, space mission environments); Analysis (statics, dynamics and load analysis, fatigue and fracture mechanics, mechanics of materials, strength analysis, heat transfer and thermal effects); Verification and quality assurance (verification planning, structural, mechanical and environmental testing, quality assurance and configuration control, compliance documentation, structural reliability analysis, verification criteria - factors of safety, margins of safety, fracture control, test options); Design (spacecraft configuration development, finite element analysis, mechanism development, designing for producibility, structural design, materials, designing to control loads, load cycles, sensitivity analysis); Final verification (model correlation, risk management, launch readiness reviews). For system engineers, mechanical designers, stress analysts, dynamics and load analysts, technical leads, program managers.

Design Of Supporting Systems For Life In Outer Space written by Annalisa Dominoni and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-07 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book is a rich source of information on design research and solutions for the support and development of space missions. International experiences and researches are presented in order to cast light on the role of space design in improving living and working conditions in outer space and to highlight the particularities of the necessary design skills, taking into account specific requirements and constraints. The challenge facing designers is how to approach environmentally extreme conditions in such a way that they are transformed from limitations into opportunities. The author has herself developed products that have been tested during on-orbit experiments on the International Space Station. Drawing on this unique experience and other case studies, the author proposes a new design methodology for space and demonstrates how the discipline of design is able to generate innovation thanks to the strong capacity of visioning. Ultimately this will lead to the development of further new equipment for astronauts that will facilitate space travel. While the book is intended primarily for students and researchers, it is also of interest for a broad readership attracted by space, innovation, and future scenarios.
