Short Story Classics (Foreign) - Volume One is a collection of popular Russian short stories that have been translated into English. Volume One includes sixteen short stories by fourteen different authors. These stories are the highlight of the collection, but certainly not the only works of value. Editor William Patten has done a wonderful job selecting the texts to be included in this collection. There are comedies, tragedies, mysteries, and romances, and the editor has managed to construct an excellent survey of popular Russian literature. While these are short stories, these are not readings intended for a young audience. Many of the works are challenging, and some deal with fairly mature subject matter. The stories included in this collection would certainly be best appreciated by mature readers, and in particular those fond of Russian literature. As an introduction into the short stories of Russia, Short Story Classics (Foreign) - Volume One is a rousing success. Patten has expertly selected works, both popular and lesser known, that are representative of Russian literature. Any individual interested in short stories from around the world will certainly enjoy this collection, which can also serve as an introduction to some of Russia's greatest artists. Excerpt from Great Short-Stories, Vol. 1 of 2: With Introductory Essays on the Great Story Writers For our purpose, that of tracing the evolution of the English short story, its history commences with the Gesta Romanorum. At the authorship of this collection of mediaeval tales, many guesses have been made. Nothing is known with certainty; it seems probable, however, judg ing from the idioms which occur, that it took its present form in England, about the end of the thirteenth or the beginning of the fourteenth century, and thence passed to the Continent. The work is written in Latin, and was evidently compiled by a man in holy orders, for its guiding purpose is to edify. In this we can trace the influence of Esop's beast-fables, which were moral lessons drawn from the animal creation for the instruction of mankind. Every chapter of the Gesta Romanorum consists of a moral tale; so much so that in many cases the application of the moral is as long as the tale itself. The title of the collection, The Deeds of the Romans, is scarcely justified; in the main it is a garnering of all the deathless plots and dramatic motives which we find scattered up and down the ages, in the legend and folk lore of whatsoever nation. The themes of many of its stories were being told, their characters passing under other names, when Romulus and Remus were suckled by their wolf-mother, before there was a Roman nation or a city named Rome. Excerpt from Selected Stories, Vol. 1 Henri Rene Albert Guy de Maupassant was born in France, August 5, 1850, at the Chateau de Miromesnil, Department of the Lower Seine. He was educated chiefly at the Rouen Lycee, and later was employed about fifteen years in the Admiralty Office in Paris. He became a friend and disciple of Gustave Flaubert, with whom he was connected by marriage. That great stylist encouraged his brilliant pupil to write, and the youth was a frequent visitor and keen observer at the -famous gatherings held in Flaubert's little house at Croisset, meeting such master spirits as Daudet, Zola, Heredia, the Freres De Goncourt, and George Sand. De Maupassant called Flaubert his literary godfather, and when his first real success came, with the publication of that vivid little sketch "Boule de Suif" ("Ball-of-Suet"), his severe but kindly mentor wrote to him: "You have produced a masterpiece, young man. Decidedly, if you keep on in this way, you will become a great writer." The young romancer took an active part in the Franco-Prussian War, and his experiences during that period suggested to him some of the most powerful of his stories.
