Excerpt from Greece, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 1 of 2: Lectures Delivered Before the Lowell Institute The Lectures now given to the public were delivered in the years 1852, 1853, 1859, and 1854, the Course desig nated as the third having been the latest in the order of delivery. It has been thought best thus to transpose the third and fourth, rather than to insert the course on Modern Greece between two courses on Ancient Greece. Excerpt from The International Law and Custom of Ancient Greece and Rome, Vol. 1 of 2 I may point out that such readers as are un acquainted with the ancient or modern languages will be able to follow the main substance of the work, inasmuch as the citations are either translated, or their purport briefly embodied in the text, according as circumstances required. In the ease of the longer passages from Thucydides and Polybius, I have grate fully availed myself of the fine translations of Jowett and Dr. Shuckburgh respectively. I had intended to give here a résumé of the subjects of public and private international law that I have considered, to indicate my reasons for their present arrangement, to show the connection of the chapters and their logical sequence, and to draw attention to the methods of exposition I have generally adopted; but, I think, all this will clearly enough appear partly in the analytical contents, and partly in various places in the course of the earlier chapters. I may say, however, that Greece and Rome have been consistently treated side by side, and, for the most part, compara tively; so that their respective acceptance of and insistence on juridical principles, and their application of a regularized procedure and legal methods to inter national relationships will thus be the more forcibly emphasized. Excerpt from The History of Ancient Greece, Its Colonies, and Conquests, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Accounts Till the Division of the Macedonian Empire in the East; Including the History of Literature, Philosophy, and the Fine Arts Many events, highly interefting to the citizens of Athens or of Sparta, now interef'c no more; concerning many important tranfaetions, anciently too familiar to be ex plained, the Modern Reader will reafonably expee'c in formation. On fome occafions, therefore, I found it neceffary to concentrate and abridge; on others, to dilate and expatiate; but have never facrificed that due relation of parts to the whole, and to each other, or violated that unity of defign which I was ambitious to attain in the prefent' Hifiory, by condefcending to copy or tranflate. In the Work throughout, I have ventured: to think for myfelf; and my opinions, whether well or: ill founded, are, at leafi, my own. Excerpt from Handbook for Travellers in Greece, Vol. 1 of 2: Including the Ionian Islands, Continental Greece, the Peloponnese, the Islands of the Aegean, Crete, Albania, Thessaly, and Macedonia, and a Detailed Description of Athens, Ancient and Modern, Classical and Medieval The present edition of this Handbook is the result of several years' careful inquiry carried out during a long residence and much travel in various parts of the countries described. The work is still in plan and foundation the Handbook prepared by Sir George F. Bowen, but has of necessity been considerably modified to meet present requirements. Nearly 200 pages have been added to the visible bulk Of the book, but an accession of space scarcely less has also been obtained by abridgment or excision of unimportant matter. Excerpt from A History of Ancient Geography, Vol. 1 of 2: Among the Greeks and Romans From the Earliest Ages Till the Fall of the Roman Empire The present work is designed to supply a deficiency, which I have reason to believe has been felt by classical scholars. While there is no want of elementary treatises on ancient geography, and the requirements of the more advanced student are fully answered by the elaborate articles in Dr. Smith's Dictionary of Ancient Geography so far as relates to the details of particular places and countries, it is remarkable that there does not exist in the English language any such historical review of the subject as a whole, as is to be found in the introductions to the works of Mannert, Ukert, and Forbiger. But even these treatises, besides being confined to students who are familiar with the German language, can hardly be said to meet the demands of either the scholar or the geographer at the present day. Ukert's introductory volume was published as far back as 1816, and that of Mannert still earlier, while the more recent work of Forbiger (itself published in 1841) is so disfigured by the accumulation of cumbrous and unnecessary lists of names as to be altogether repulsive to the English reader. Excerpt from Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography, Vol. 1 of 2: Abacaenum, Hytanis Our knowledge of ancient Geography has been much enlarged within the last few years by the researches of modern travellers, many of whom have united an accurate knowledge of the ancient writers with great powers of observation and accuracy of description. There are few countries of the ancient world which have not been explored and described by our own countrymen; but a knowledge of the results thus obtained is confined to a few, and has not yet been made available for the purposes of instruction. Hitherto there has not existed, either in the English or in the German language, any work sufliciently comprehensive and accurate to satisfy the demands of modern scholarship. The German works upon this subject are unusually scanty. In English, the only systematic works worthy of mention are the well-known treatises of Cramer upon Greece, Italy, and Asia Minor, which however have now become obsolete. Since the publication of his Greece, for instance, we have had the incomparable travels of Colonel Leake, the results of the discoveries of the French Com mission in the Peloponnesus, and the works of Ross, Ulrichs, Curtius, and other learned German travellers. No apology is therefore necessary for the publication of a new work upon Ancient Geography, which is in many respects more needed by the student than the two former Dictionaries.
