Excerpt from The Greek View of Life The following pages are intended to serve as a general introduction to Greek literature and thought, for those, primarily, who do not know Greek. Whatever opinions may be held as to the value of translations, it seems clear that it is only by their means that the majority of modern readers can attain to any knowledge of Greek culture; and as I believe that culture to be still, as it has been in the past, the most valuable element of a liberal education, I have hoped that such an attempt as the present to give, with the help of quotations from the original authors, some general idea of the Greek view of life, will not be regarded as labour thrown away. Excerpt from A Survey of Greek Civilization I fear that this separation is being carried out beyond its legitimate or useful degree even in the separation of secular. And religious subjects, of intellectual and moral studies. To take the most signal example: In the Roman Catholic Church it is an avowed principle that theology is the only necessary science for the edu cation oi a priest, that this theology, far from being eu lightened, is likely to be endangered by secular knowl edge. On the other hand, the scientist generally stands aloof from theology, and too often expresses his con tempt for it as a non-progressive science, or if he be of a better moral fibre, and acknowledges the weight and importance of religion, he is ready to accept, as a mere layman, what his pastor or other clerical adviser may teach. Excerpt from The Life of the Ancient Greeks With Special Reference to Athens Teachers generally concur in the opinion that foot-notes are distracting to the student, if not entirely neglected by him, and for this reason other authorities besides Xenophon are not cited, though I should have liked to acknowledge the source, ancient or modern, of some statements which may seem open to question. I have often felt that some of our best texts of the authors are overburdened with an notation. Perhaps a careful reading of such chapters in the present work as suit the teacher's purpose may do away with the necessity of requiring the pupil to study long notes in the text-books, which necessarily can offer but one or two points of view, and which usually conclude by referring the student to a dictionary of antiquities. In order to render the pictures more useful, I have added an index of all the objects which they portray, by the use of which the teacher will gain much additional material, and may be able to assign subjects for short com positions ou the externals of Greek life. Though the book is intended primarily for students in our secondary schools and in the Freshman year at college, the general reader also, I hope, will find it adapted to his purpose. No knowledge of the Greek language is required, and though the citing of Greek terms could not be avoided, these have either been transliterated or so incorporated within the sentence that their meaning comes first, and the reader who has no acquaintance even with the Greek alphabet may calmly disregard them. Excerpt from The Study of Greek Now more than ever science, whether about things mental or material, needs the fineness of touch, which no other language has in the same degree, for her multifarious work of defining, sorting, analyzing. Now, more than even in the century of the Renaissance, the culture in which ancient Greece still stands unrivalled is almost deified. Now the specialty of our studies is to exhume the records of the past. Now the atten tion of religious people is turned, as in the days of Casaubon, to the investigation of old manu scripts. And yet now is the time chosen for a vehement assault on the study of the language, history, literature of the Hellenic race. It might be added, that the disparagement of Greek is all the more strange at a time when the athletics, in which Hellas has excelled all nations, are ex alted in England to the dignity of an art, a science, almost a religion. Excerpt from Outlines of Greek History: With a Survey of Ancient Oriental Nations The purpose of this book is to give to young students a general idea of the growth and character of the civilization of ancient Greece. As it is intended to form, with the author's Outlines of Roman History, a complete elementary course in ancient history, it contains a brief introduction - indicating the relation of history to civilization in general, and referring to the primitive culture with which civilization may be said to begin. It also contains a preliminary sketch of the progress of civilization before the time of the Greeks among the ancient Oriental peoples. Excerpt from Greek Life and Thought: From the Age of Alexander to the Roman Conquest In'the second place, as this book was not in tended exclusively for scholars, it became necessary to introduce some account of the history and litera ture of the age as the background for the estimate of life and manners, which is my main Object. I might possibly have assumed a knowledge of this history and literature in the scholar, though, even for scholars, the epoch is one of great complication and obscurity, lying outside the bounds of ordinary classical reading; but, from the general reader, this special knowledge could not possibly be expected. Hence there is more actual history in the present volume than in its predecessor, and its limits are marked, not by great authors, but by great political events. Excerpt from Social Life in Greece: From Homer to Menander Among the nations which stand out in the course of history as having done most to promote human knowledge, human art, and human culture, the Greeks are first in the judgment of all competent observers. The hold which Greek literature retains on our modern education is not the mere result of prece dent or fashion. Every thinking man who becomes acquainted with the masterpieces of Greek writing, must see plainly that they stand to us in a far closer relation than the other remains of antiquity. They are not mere Obj ects of curiosity to the archaologist, not mere treasure-houses of roots and forms to be sought out by comparative grammarians. They are the writings of men of like culture with ourselves, who argue with the same logic, who reflect with kindred feelings. They have worked out social and moral problems like ourselves; they have expressed them in such language as we should desire to use. In a word, they are thoroughly modern, more modern even than the epochs quite proximate to our own. The disjointed sentences of the Egyptian moralist.
