Whether any considerable number exists for the Hebrew race I cannot say; one thinks, of course, of Matthew Arnold's 'hebraism and Hellenism, ' and the like, which would hardly con tent the scholar and the scientist. If the number is large, it would be well to collect them and publish certain excellent specimens. Meanwhile, is it not worth noting that for the Greek race, which would commonly be chosen as typical of humanity, we have very many of these characterizations? So far as I am aware, the present volume, designed in the main for other purposes, constitutes the first attempt to present a body of such material. In this respect he got, up to the age of about fourteen, just what the average grammar-school boy of his time got. What this was is known, because we have access to the curricula of the schools of the period. The Latin that he read, for example, was by no means prodigious in quantity. Whether he knew any Greek at all or not is a moot question, though some have thought so on the strength of the mellifluous names of his heroines. His knowledge of French is, I suppose, vouched for by the scenes in that idiom in Henry V. His early withdrawal from school is supposed to have been due to his father's poverty. Of the literary products of the Hellenistic age few complete specimens survive. Yet the comparatively scanty materials we possess, com bined with what we know from other sources, enable us to draw certain general conclusions. Nature and Love - these are the two new motives which now enter into imaginative literature: or, if the motives themselves are not wholly new, the mode of poetic utterance is perceptibly altered. There is an inwardness of tone, a reflectiveness, a heightened sensibility - often indicating a vague disquiet of the mind and betraying itself in accents of longing or regret - that may be traced also in other regions of feeling. Excerpt from The Greek Genius and Its Meaning to Us When I began to teach Latin and Greek, a friend asked me what I supposed myself to have learnt from them, and what I was trying to teach others. This book was written as an attempt to answer the question, as far as Greek is concerned. It was written to inform, primarily myself, secondarily my pupils. It is therefore intentionally popular, and, like the poems of Lucilius, designed neque indoctissimis neque doctissimis: it uses modern illustrations, and tries, as far as possible, to put what it has to say in a readable form. I hope it may serve as a general introduction to the study of Greek literature, and for that purpose be acceptable, not only to such students or teachers of the classics as feel themselves to be in the class indicated above, but also to the considerable public who take a humane interest in what Greece has done for the world. For my intention has been to try and make the spirit of Greece alive for myself at the present day, to translate it, as far as I could, into modern language, and to trace its relationship to our own ways of thinking and feeling. If I do not apologize for the manner in which this ambitious task has been executed, it is not because I have no misgivings. Few people could write a book on this subject, and feel satisfied with it. Still, if I am not convincing, I shall at any rate be contentious, and educationally the second quality is perhaps more valuable than the first. Excerpt from The Greek Genius and Its Influence: Select Essays and Extracts This volume appears in response to the needs of one of my classes, and is meant to supply a part of the necessary background for the study of Greek and Latin masterpieces in standard English translations, and to stimulate and rectify the comparison of ancient with modern literature. But I hope it will be useful also to classical students in the narrower sense, and trust it may in some fashion promote the study of Greek in America, if only by striking a blow at the provincial notion that we have nothing to learn from the past. Doubtless there is an element of chance in the selection of materials for a volume like this. Indeed, I must admit at the outset my inability to secure from the publishers the right to reprint Butchers first essay (What We Owe to Greece) in Some Aspects of the Greek Genius, and Livingstone's third chapter (The Note of Directness) in The Greek Genius and its Meaning to Us, both of which I would gladly have included. But aside from these I may affirm that the choice is probably less fortuitous than may appear on the surface, since I have been guided by conscious principles in selecting and rejecting materials, and for the most part in arranging the materials selected. Of purposeful omissions, what shall I say? I seem to have read much (of course, not all) of what has latterly been written on the nature of the Greek genius and its legacy to modern times; and a great deal of what is said on the topic strikes me as misleading. Partly under the influence of Boeckh and Croiset, I have, in the course of a dozen years, formed a somewhat definite notion of the Greek spirit, and have come almost instinctively, and yet for definite reasons, to eliminate what have seemed to me perilous deviations from a true perspective. One could not very well proceed otherwise. The selections have been taken from humbler and loftier, and from more or less erudite, sources.
