Excerpt from Greek Moulds The present volume contains a catalogue of plaster and clay moulds intended for the fabrication of bronzes and terracottas l. Stamps and stone moulds have not been included. A large part of the material has been exhibited in the Museum for many years, though it has attracted little attention hitherto. The only mention of it, so far as I am aware, occurs in the Notice of 1 895-7 where it is described as 11 moules pour fabriquer des tetes de Bes etc. A (p. 1 o 1 Salle [13 Armoire C) The moulds for bronzes form far the larger and more interesting part of the collection. They not only comprise some charming fragments of later Greek art, but they are also important for their hearing on the question of ancient bronze casting. This portion ofthe material being probably unique I have descrlbed it at some length in the following introduction, which I hope will be found useful even though the explanations offered be not always correct for it is a somewhat peri lous subject to handle without a practical knowledge of modern technique. Excerpt from Greek Bronzes The methods of bronze-casting in Egypt in graeco-roman times are better illustrated by the moulds than by the bronzes. I have discussed this question in the Introduction to the former volume. Most of the bronzes described in the present catalogue were probably made in the way of which the preliminary stages are exemplified by the plaster moulds. Indeed although no bronze in our collection appears to have been made by means of one of the extant moulds, it is probable enough that several of them come from the same factories as the latter. Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work.
