Energy recovery from waste resources holds a significant role in the sustainable waste management hierarchy to support the concept of circular economies and to mitigate the challenges of waste originated problems of sanitation, environment, and public health. Today, waste disposal to landfills is the most widely used methodology, particularly in developing countries, because of limited budgets and lack of efficient infrastructure and facilities to maintain efficient and practical global standards. As a consequence, the dump-sites or non-sanitary landfills have become the significant sources of greenhouse gases emissions, soil and water contamination, unpleasant odors, leachate, and disease spreading vectors, flies, and rodents. However, waste can be utilized to produce a range of potential products such as energy, fuels and value-added products under waste biorefineries. A holistic and quantitative view, such as waste biorefinery, on waste management must be linked to the actual country, taking into account its socio-economic situation, local waste sources, and composition, as well as the available markets for the recovered energy and products. Therefore, it is critical to understand that solutions cannot be just copied from one region to the others. In fact, all waste handling, transportation, and treatment can represent a burden to the cities’ environment and macro and micro economics, except for the benefits obtained from recovered materials and energy. Equally significant is a clear and quantitative understanding of the industrial, and public potential of utilizing recovered materials and energy in the markets as these can be reached without exacerbating the environmental issues using excessive transport. The book explores new advancements and discoveries on the development of emerging waste-to-energy technologies, practical implementation, and lessons learned from sustainable wastemanagement practices under waste biorefinery concept, which will accelerate the growth of circular economies in the world. The articles presented in this book have been written by expert researchers and academics working in institutions at different countries across the world including Germany, Greece, Japan, South Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran, and India. Naturally available nanomaterials or those synthesized from natural resources become “new favorite” of material world due to their advantages of low cost, safety and environmental friendliness. They are honored as future “green materials” and widely used in fabricating various functional materials. Naturally available materials have been playing an increasingly important role in many fields such as environmental remediation, separation, catalysis, and polymer composites. This book collects latest research results on the new composites for environmental application, focusing on the study of fabricating functional composites using natural clay minerals. Naturally available materials or solid waste or minerals are good precursors for producing adsorbents. Composites based on sub-bituminous coal, lignite, and a blend of coal and Irvingia gabonensis seed shells, the Cl-type Mg-Al hydrotalcite (Cl-LDH), the hydroxyapatite decorated with carbon nanotube and Zirconium (Zr)-containing silica residue purification (ZSR-P) were proved to have good adsorption capability to Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions, antibiotic molecules, Cd(II), and fluoride, respectively. The nano-Mg(OH)2 loaded carbon cloth showed good separation effect for Eu(III), and the sodium-modified clinoptilolite showed good separation effect for CH4/N2 from coal bed gas. Also, natural nanoclay is an effective precursor for the preparation of inorganic-inorganic or organic-inorganic nano-hybrid materials. Using nano-kaolinite as a carrier, the inorganic-inorganic hybrid cobalt blue pigment with excellent color and stability can be obtained by surface co-precipitation and in-situ calcination crystallization process. The intercalation of 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin (AMC) molecules into the interlayer space of montmorillonite (MMT) can effectively inhibit fluorescence quenching and improve the detection effectiveness of Cr(VI) in water. The interlayer space of kaolinite can accommodate organic molecules to form an organic-inorganic hybrid composite. Natural clay minerals are also effective carriers for catalysts. Er3+:CeO2/palygorskite nanocomposites prepared by a facile precipitation method showed excellent desulfurization rate under visible light irradiation. The zero-valent iron-loaded nanoclays composite catalysts can degrade efficiently Rhodamine 6G (Rh 6G) under microwave irradiation. In addition, the polymer composites have been developed using natural palygorskite, montmorillonite nanosheets or silica nanoparticles as inorganic components, which are potential to be used in many fields such as packing, biomedicine, or rubber. With the increasing attention to clay minerals, research methods for the microstructure of clay minerals continue to receive attention. It is no doubt that natural materials have got a booming attention from researchers in mineralogy, materials science, chemistry, energy, biomedicine and other fields due to their advantages. However, there is still a long way to go to substitute traditional synthetic nanomaterials with natural ones, and there are still theoretical and technological limitation in the design and synthesis of new materials from natural materials. Related theoretical research and technological development require continuous exploration by researchers. This book has collected some recent advances in related research, and hopes to play a role in attracting more attention to the construction of functional materials from natural raw materials. It is also believed that through the unremitting efforts of all researchers, the dream of green materials and green preparation processes can be realized.

In this book, Ann Laura Stoler navigates the shadows and shatterzones of democratic policies, considering how imperial features are folded through (il)liberal orders, where racial inequities thicken in the borderlands of interior frontiers. Sometimes those frontiers, or the lines that define the contours of belonging and not belonging, are porous--often fixed and firm. For those on the wrong side of the fabulated division between inside and out, entry requirements can be opaque, neither verbal nor visible. Illegibilities are secured in code. The sites of inequity are disparate, the sensibilities that produce and sustain those inequities are as well. Borrowing Ralph Ellison's phrase, Stoler exposes unexpected sites and scenes that register the lower frequencies of denigration. Seemingly benign sites are laid bare as toxic, as in her essay eviscerating the warped criteria assigned to taste and who can have it, and in her study of the seared lives that longing, envy, and humiliation inscribe. In so doing, she hews close to the soft violences of sentiments that ascribe, distribute, and assess human kinds. But the project of these essays turns as much to those who reject those violences, who distil refusal in poetic rage--the phrase Stoler invokes to describe the anti-colonial avant-garde. Stoler casts this aesthetic of dissent through a surge of multi-media archiving ventures among Palestinians bent on creating and conjuring landscapes beyond Israeli violences-for the future and today. Stoler hugs close to the dark corridors where racial inequalities thrive. These inequities may be blatant but unnoticed, others are neither muted nor unseen. Each essay iterates a (sub)metric of inequality as a fictive measure of human worth. With an optic, ever bold and subtle, she turns the reader to the social ecologies and racial logics targeting the body and the senses. These are hazardous zones for the instruments and infrastructures in which (il)liberalisms invest. Increasingly unsettled and challenged by a more radically just demos, these sites of contest may be the emergent political scenes of racial sovereignty's unmaking and where the weapons of that unmaking are readied, and stored.
