Griffith Review once again turns its attention to the fast-growing novella form with its annual edition dedicated to the five winning entries from our fourth novella competition. Past editions have featured both outstanding established writers, and emerging talent, with some novellas going on to be developed into published novels. The novellas that emerge from our competition, Cate Kennedy writes, are ‘short enough to consume like a single satisfying meal, long enough to linger over with coffee…(they) deliver us into worlds we don’t expect and have a hard time forgetting. For sheer invention and range, the authors showcase the vitality and scope of the short form to create dynamic, visceral and memorable worlds.’ Or, as British author David Mitchell commented: ‘I like the length of a novella…It’s short enough to be a getaway car from the cops of boredom.’

Griffith Review 81 The Leisure Principle written by Carody Culver and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08 with Leisure categories.

In 1930, John Maynard Keynes spelt out a vision of the impending utopia. Work, he said, will become a thing of the past. 'For the first time since creation,' he predicted, 'man will be faced with his real, his permanent problem -- how to occupy the leisure which science...will have won for him.' So where did this vision of future past go? Like baco-foil suits and meals of protein pills, it proved to be a concept that withered on the vine. Instead of an excess of free time to be enjoyed at leisure, a radically different regime now dominates the developed nations: the leisure principle. The leisure principle is one of work hard to play hard, a rigorous pursuit of monetarised hedonism: YOLO, live your best life, have a good time all the time. From the ecstasy of the digital to the monied spectacle that is sport, the gamification of everyday life to the flourishing hierarchy of influencers, Griffith Review 81: The Leisure Principle sets out to scrutinise the terms and conditions of this contemporary compact and consider how we came to cede so much just to amuse ourselves to death.

Motor Vehicles The Environment And The Human Condition written by Hans A. Baer and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-09 with Science categories.

The world now has more than a billion motor vehicles, and this number continues to increase as developing countries imitate developed societies in their adoption of the culture of automobility. This book explores the political ecology of motor vehicles in an era of growing social disparities and environmental crises, the latter of which are most manifest in anthropogenic climate change to which motor vehicles constitute a major contributor. A political ecological perspective recognizes that motor vehicles, perhaps more than any other machine, embody the social, structural, cultural, and environmental contradictions of the capitalist world system. In addition to highlighting many of the environmental, social, and health, environmental consequences of humanity’s increasing reliance on motor vehicles, particularly private automobiles, this book argues that ultimately we need as a species to move beyond motor vehicles as much as possible but that such an effort will have be part and parcel of creating an alternative world system based on social justice, democratic processes, environmental sustainability, and a safe climate, one termed democratic eco-socialism.
