Sherwood Anderson spielt in der Entwicklung der Kurzgeschichte, die man als einen bedeutenden Bestandteil der amerikanischen Literatur bezeichnen kann, als Begründer der modernen amerikanischen Kurzgeschichte eine wichtige Rolle. Als Basis für den erfolgreichen Einzug der amerikanischen Kurzgeschichte in die Haushalte der Bevölkerung der Vereinigten Staaten diente im 19. Jahrhundert die Gründung von hunderten von literaturwissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften, wie North American Review oder Knickerbocker Magazine.Diese Zeitschriften machten es sich zum Ziel, einheimische Schriftsteller zu unterstützen und veröffentlichten aus diesem Grund hauptsächlich Auszüge aus deren Werken. Kurzgeschichten erfreuten sich damals steigender Beliebtheit. Das lag daran, dass sie nur wenige Seiten lang waren und man sie, im Vergleich zum Roman, in recht kurzer Zeit lesen konnte. Durch ihren geringen Umfang eigneten sie sich auch besonders zu einer Veröffentlichung in literaturwissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften. Die meisten Autoren von Kurzgeschichten zogen es in der Regel vor, ihre Geschichten zunächst als Einzelstücke in einem literarischen Magazin zu veröffentlichen, bevor sie diese in einem Sammelband zusammen mit anderen Erzählungen publizierten. Auf diese Weise konnten die Werke einer breiten Leserschaft vorgestellt werden und erhielten dadurch mehr Aufmerksamkeit. Die ersten amerikanischen Autoren von Kurzgeschichten, wie Washington Irving, ließen sich beim Schreiben zunächst noch stark von ihren europäischen Kollegen inspirieren und imitierten dabei die literarische Form der europäischen Romantiker. Dabei griffen sie bevorzugt Themen auf, wie deutsche und europäische Legenden, und versuchten, sie in amerikanische Themen umzuwandeln. Bald aber begannen einige Autoren, wie Nathaniel Hawthorne und Edgar Allen Poe, sich von der europäischen Tradition zu lösen. Sie entwickelten einen eigenen Schreibstil, der den Sketchen und den regelmäßigen Aufsätzen des 18. Jahrhunderts ähnelte und Elemente des Romans enthielt. Um 1920 erfolgte schließlich der Umbruch der Kurzgeschichte zur Modernität, der durch die Rezeption der Erkenntnisse der modernen Psychologie und durch die Weltkriegserfahrung angetrieben wurde.6
