The Gold Coast is one of Australia's premier tourism destinations, a city cut out of coastal vegetation, including paperbark swamps, mangroves and rainforests of worldwide significance. The Gold Coast Transformed is a collection of integrated chapters identifying and assessing the environmental impacts of the building of Australia's sixth largest city. From the time of the first timber-getters through to the present, the book traces the cumulative impacts of humans on the now World Heritage-listed rainforest and surrounding ecosystems. The city's natural and engineered environments are both fascinating and vulnerable. The construction of massive high-rise apartment blocks, on what were frontal beach dunes, is one of the fundamental mistakes not to be repeated. The book illustrates how and why major environmentally destructive development took place and discusses the impacts of such development on the Gold Coast's beaches, wildlife, and terrestrial and marine environments, such as the destruction of riparian mangrove forest. The Gold Coast Transformed also shows the possibility of sustaining natural populations and reducing the city's ecological footprint. It will be of interest to ecologists, environmental scientists and managers, town planners, economists, policymakers and the general public.

Excerpt from The Natives of the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast: Their Customs, Religion and Folklore In these days, when the phenomenon generally termed "civilisation" is extending, to a greater or lesser degree, over the Continent of Africa, there is a growing tendency, that appears not only among European residents but among the natives themselves, to lose sight of the inner significance of the old-established native customs, which will, in course of time, inevitably disappear or become myths and "old wives' tales." It is for this reason that the publication of monographs on the ethnology of African tribes, such as that written by my colleague and friend, Mr. A. W. Cardinall, are to be welcomed. Many Europeans are too prone to sum up native customs as did the schoolboy, who, when replying to a question as to the manners and customs of the Ancient Britons, wrote, "Manners, vile; Customs, beastly." But even those African native customs that appear to us both degrading and repulsive have in them the germ of some mistaken duty to parents and superiors: of reverence to ancestors, or to an unknown Being who exercises supreme power for good or ill over the lives and destinies of his devotees. Let us take, for instance, the practice of human sacrifice that flourished for so long among the Ashantis and other West African tribes. This terrible custom signified, in its origin, nothing more or less than a blind desire on the part of the native to "honour his father," or to pay due veneration to superiors. Interest in growing native plants has burgeoned in recent years, especially with many more varieties of native plants being available in specialist and general nurseries. Gardeners are not only drawn to native plants for their beauty, but also because they attract birds and butterflies to their gardens and are the ideal plants for our warmer summers and drier conditions. The variety of Australian native plants is enormous, some 20,000 species. They are found in just about any situation, from deserts to rainforests to alpine regions. Many are tolerant of saline conditions, some of arid conditions, some make excellent windbreaks, some withstand pollution, others tolerate flooding and more. So it doesn't matter where you live, there is a wide selection to suit your conditions. You don't even need a garden, they can be successfully grown in pots on a balcony or patio. If you are thinking about starting a native garden, or perhaps you want to improve and change what you already have, then this book will help you to make the right choices. Part 1 gives you all the basic information, including choosing the correct plants, landscaping with natives, caring for them, taking cuttings, tackling problems, and much more. Part 2 is an extensive plant encyclopaedia that covers all the main genera of Australian plants, their habits and cultivation requirements. The authors, John Mason and his colleagues at the Australian Horticultural Correspondence School, have written this book based on their wealth of knowledge and their years of experience in growing Australian native plants.
