Excerpt from Growing Alfalfa in Illinois For Beef Cattle. Corn and alfalfa hay make an ideal ration for fattening cattle. These feeds can be grown successfully on almost every corn-belt farm. They are easily stored and fed, and a ration of them is well enough balanced for all practical purposes Three acres of corn and one acre of alfalfa pro duce 8 percent more beef at 9 percent less cost than the same area planted wholly in corn. Excerpt from Varieties of Oats for Illinois The system of rotating corn and oats is not so injurious to the productivity of the soil as growing corn every year. On the Morrow plots at the University of Illinois, where corn has been grown every year since 1879 Without soil treatment, the last 23-year average yield of corn is bushels an acre, whereas on the nearby plot that has been cropped to corn and oats alternately, the yield of corn for the same period is bushels an acre. The average yield of oats during this period is bushels an acre. The average value of the crops produced each year on the corn and oats plot, according to the average December 1 price, is an acre more than that of the corn from the continuous-corn plot. It is commonly conceded that changing from corn to oats and then back to corn is not a good rotation, yet there are certain advantages in the practice. Also the cost of labor required to produce a crop of oats is considerably less than that needed to grow a crop of corn. Another advantage which the culture of oats affords is the opportunity of oh taining a stand of clover. Altho barley is generally conceded to be the best nurse crop for clover and alfalfa, it is not greatly superior in this respect to the early-maturing varieties of oat-s. Excerpt from Alfalfa: Growing for Seed and Hay According to the accompanying map, which was compiled from data secured from the census of 1899, the general distribution of the large alfalfa growing sections is indicated. Each dot represents one thousand acres in the county where the dot is located. For this reason, only the large alfalfa producing sections are dotted, as counties having less than one thousand acres are not marked. Fig. 1. - Map of the United States, showing the distribution of alfalfa in 1899. (westgate - Farmers' Bul. 339. U. S. Dept. Agriculture.) In the irrigated sections of the West, the production of alfalfa has greatly increased, especially where new areas have been thrown Open to-irrigation. The extension of alfalfa in the eastern half of the country has been so great that there is probably three times as much alfalfa being grown as there was ten years ago. Its rapid extension in the Great Plains region is indicated by the fact that in Kansas the assessors' reports in 1891, when alfalfa was first listed separately, showed acres, while in 1907 there were acres reported. Advance reports for the Fall of 1909 indicate ap proximately acres in Kansas for the year 1909. In the arid regions of the western half of the country, on the areas which have been brought under cultivation in the last ten years, alfalfa has been extensively planted._ In the eastern half of the country the limestone sections ofier the best prospects for the successful production of alfalfa. The limestone regions around Lake Champlain, and in Central New York are producing successful results. The limestone valleys of Maryland and Virginia, and the black prairie soils of Alabama and Mississippi are also proving adapted to alfalfa and offer good possibilities for farmers who are acquainted with the production of alfalfa in the West. The Eastern States call for a large amount of alfalfa seed from the West, and the chances of success with alfalfa in the East increase greatly as the special requirements for its production are understood and provided for. Excerpt from Soybeans: Their Effect on Soil Productivity For several reasons this popularity of soybeans, and consequently the interest in their effect on the soil, is likely to continue. Some of these-reasons are: (1) Supported by the many industrial uses dis covered for soybean products, soybeans as a cash crop have brought larger money returns than some other crops in the rotation, particularly oats. (2) Soybeans make a good legume hay, high in protein and mineral elements. (3) They yield fairly well on soils too acid or too low in productivity to grow alfalfa or clovers successfully. (4) They are outstanding in drouth resistance, usually doing well wherever a good seedbed can be prepared, even in seasons too dry for seedings of alfalfa or clover to survive. (5) Like other legumes, they can obtain from the air a large proportion of the nitrogen they require, provided they are well nodulated. (6) They grow rapidly, are annuals, and therefore may be used as emergency hay or grain crops in late wet springs or at times when clovers and alfalfa have failed. (7) They are resistant to chinch bugs. (8) They serve well as a pasture crop, seeded either alone or in combination with other crops. These are some of the favorable qualities which account for the widespread adoption of soybeans in Illinois; but if soybeans are to be fitted most usefully into Illinois cropping systems, their limitations also must be recognized. In this bulletin both the favorable and the unfavorable aspects of soybeans in relation to the soil are discussed.
